The State of Things?

Recommended Posts

I just overtook last year's total number of sales. But the average fee per licence is one fifth of last year's. That took me aback.

Global, or just me?

Definite big drop in prices. No bigger book sales and newspaper prices - even printed versions look like novel use. Quite depressed about it.

I am almost equal with last years total sales number but the income graph is well down.

I have also just overtaken last year's total volume of sales but total income is only 3/4 of last year's.  I haven't worked out the average sale price for each year - I suspect that would be rather depressing.

I have had my best year for sales numbers (since 2002) and the average fee was within a whisker of last year. But is is half each of my best three years.

That said my numbers are such that it is not statistically meaningful to draw any conclusions. :(

I passed last year's total sales in August, and passed total revenue for 2015 a couple of weeks ago. So the price per license has fallen... but not by much...

Alan, do you really mean one-fifth?  Or one-fifth down?  My figures for sales volume are headed for slightly up on last year but my income will be down; but it's not a fifth of last year, more like three-quarters, i.e. down by about 25%.

It feels like I'm taking two small steps forward (more submissions, improved keywording, etc.) but one giant step backwards (lower prices).  For what it's worth, I am not in the newspaper scheme and I only signed up for distribution to a limited number of territories: ones in which I have had decent sales in the past, so I think this will have helped my price per image figure.

I try not to get depressed about it: looking at your avatar, perhaps you need a new one ;)

Just to change the tone a bit, sales and revenue already well up on last year's totals. Average licence fee up by 10%. I'm sure I'm not alone.

92% of 2015 sales at this point, for 80% of the revenue

The situation is even worse if I go back to 2013 - I'm almost at the same volume but revenue is less than 50%. However I had two very large sales that year.

Your not alone, for me it is good too.   150% of 2015 sales at this point. and 196%!! of total revenue of last year.

Overtook numbers last month, average down a quarter.

I too hope Inch means DOWN a fifth, not TO a fifth.

Surpassed 2015 volume early in August. However, revenue is down 20% and no 3 figure sales for 4 months.

With less than 3 years data I can't really give a definitive answer but I've well exceeded both numbers sold and gross revenue between 2015 and 2016.  Average gross per image is a bit lower this year than last - $25.2 against $31.2 - but higher than during my first year with Alamy in 2014.

sales up 30% on 2015 and revenue up 40%

however not so good when compared to 2014

so trend variable from my perspective

98% of last year's sales for 74% of the revenue. Potential increase in annual sales maybe commensurate with increase in portfolio size, but I don't keep records.

Mind you last year's revenue was skewed by a 4 figure sale in October, while I haven't seen a 3 figure sale this year since, I think, May.

In the news today, Mail group newspapers seeing a drop in advertising revenue and redundancies resulting - maybe they shouldn't have pushed for Brexit......

Close to last year, one more sale will do it. But revenue down. 5 sales so far this month doesn't add up to 3 figures. 5=1middling used to be.

As of today I'm at 87% of 2015 sales, with revenue at 88% of 2015.

So for me it seems prices are holding.

When this years sales equalled last years, revenue was 53% of last years.

So far, 104% of last years sales (good), and 100% of last years gross revenue (OK).

Thing is, the last few years weren't great.  Compared to 2012, so far I have 57% of the sales and 60% of gross revenue.  Not exactly progress considering I now have twice as many images.

edit: four sales dropped in today for $300 total.  Unexpected.

Sadly I meant exactly what I said. To be precise, this years average is 21% of last year's. I have had nothing but low-value sales this year, after 7 years of fairly decent licences.

I'm seeing a similar increase in the number of sales but a steady decrease in revenue per image.

As of today the number of sales is up 125% over 2015

Revenue is 75% of last year
