Last time I briefly visited France, they had all these new French words like 'horodateur' (parking meter') because they don't want to use English words. I felt like a total stranger.

umm,  Parking, ferry, weekend, footing,

pretty sure they used horodateur from early days for these one centralised parking ticket sellers, because they were actually one of the early adopter of technology

Sure, there are still plenty of English words in use.

However, to my knowledge, there is no French word for 'upload' to the internet, only 'download' (télécharger). I hope I'm wrong.

obviously my base is Québec which was more rigorous in business terms, but télécharger is used both for upload and download, and context would identify the direction.

A long time ago, Bernini placed a bunch of angels on a bridge in Rome, including this one, Angle with a Cross, by sculptor Ercole Ferrata.

Some years later, this retired Italian fisherman on Giglio Island allowed me to capture him.

I'll take a different tack.

Instead of history, how about the "End of History?" Berlin 1994

Great challenge, Gen. Hard to choose three, but here's mine.
