February 2022 Challenge 'Chiaroscuro'

Martin L

Recommended Posts

Chiaroscuro literally translated from the Italian as 'light-dark', generally termed 'low-key' in photography

A style characterized by really heavy contrast, deep shadows and generally a single light source highlighting just part of the subject

Further info can be found here Chiaroscuro - Wikipedia or Low-key photography - Wikipedia.

Maybe a bit more 'arty' than 'stocky' but I love this style, for me it creates the most atmospheric, dramatic images that I have seen. It can conjure some real emotion.

There are some great examples on the Wiki pages but below are some of my attempts.

Usual rules apply, three entries and must have been submitted to Alamy.

Competition closes Midnight Monday 28th Feb 2022

Have fun!

Congrats again Martin.  This is a tough one, I had not heard of that term!  I had to run through my images in my head as the keywords don't work as well. I hope I have the idea correct.

You are not wrong. One letter at a time and one finger typing and still got it wrong a few times

Too common Italian words stuck together. The first part 'chi' is pronounced like 'key' in English.

Not a lot of high key images in my collection it seems, but here are my three offerings...

I agree with Martin, unless you really have nothing that works for this challenge, you should submit a few, you just never know.  It’s just for fun anyway!

Head down and tail between legs?  🤨

I am thinking of giving it a miss too.  Have not found anything suitable yet and did not use  'Chiaroscuro' as a keyword in my images which makes it more difficult.
