AlexG
Hello and happy new year, everyone! For this month's challenge, submit up to 3 images on the topic of IRONY. It could be any sort of scenario - a sign saying one thing while the scene around it contradicts it, an unusual animal gathering, an unlikely street protest or happening, etc. Use your imagination. It can be an abstract concept too. I find this a bit ironic... Assignment closes at the end of the last day of the month. I will try to post the poll for voting within the first couple of days of February. Have fun with this, or not (wink)! Marianne
Congrats Alex. Tough challenge indeed but good to get us all thinking about different types of keywords.Water in the desert - they get about 3 days of rain a year - we were there for all of it and it was so cold in the late spring! I guess that's irony: Edited January 10, 2020 by Marianne

Homeless man sleeping on the street next to an upscale jewelry store (cruel irony, I guess you could say) John, this photo reminds me of the best photo I never took. Back in the opulent 1980's I was walking down Park Avenue in NYC on my way to work, and there was a homeless person sleeping outside a fancy hotel restaurant, the chef was framed in the window in his white outfit and big hat. I was practicing law at the time, but remember wishing I had a camera with me. The sense of irony was intense.

Unfortunately, scenes like this one are not uncommon in Vancouver, which regularly gets named one of the best cities in the world to live in -- but not for everyone apparently. VbFolly
Well done on your win, Alex. Here's a couple of entries from me. Allan Bell
Alex this is a tough one. I can usually simply search my port for the subject but searching for "Irony" or "Ironic" draws a blank. Will have to search through nearly 5000 images.🙄 Allan
spacecadet
Not the sort of thing I usually put up (or even take, these days) However... Alex you may have to look up our recent UK elections (and not-so-recent political history) to work this one out. However it's got to go in. Taken 4 hours after the polls closed, in a different hemisphere. On top of all that, it's more sarcasm than irony but I hope for a generous interpretation of the rules. Alex may need to look up the English word "bilge" for this one.... . Edited January 11, 2020 by spacecadet

Vintage car rally participant in time costume looking at her cell phone. Santa taking tram, and having to change his own track. Colin Woods
Ouch. A really tough subject. I don't think my three are literally ironic, but they do represent a contrast of concepts which is as close as I can get to irony in my photos. The photos here looks a bit squashed, so click them to see them in their natural dimensions. Spreepark in Berlin. It used to be the only theme park in the socialist people's paradise. As soon as the wall came down the owner ran off to Peru with the best rides and all the money and the park fell into disrepair. Jewish war grave at Fricourt on the Somme. Jewish soldiers fought (and died) in large numbers for their homeland. It counted for nothing 25 years later. Life and death. Roses growing against the grave of an anonymous soldier. Cecile Marion
Endangered Snail Kites, not seen in our part of Florida in over a hundred years, have come north after losing their habitat to climate change (hurricanes and flooding). At the same time the invasive apple snail, their primary source of food, has infiltrated our wetlands. Rome: Beauty, and the beastly tourists who come to see the beauty. Gravesite of actor/director Christophe Otzenberger in Monmartre Cemetery, Paris (probably more unique than ironic, but I like the juxtaposition) Edited January 12, 2020 by Cecile Marion Added captions
Sally
A good but tricky topic.
