Average Gross revenue/sale trends?

Recommended Posts

Alamy "Our average price across the board remains pretty static at around $30 across all licences and this has been the case for the last few years".

See https://discussion.alamy.com/topic/15060-018-sale/?do=findComment&comment=304682

So I thought I'd see how my gross revenue / sale compares with this $30 "benchmark".

Screenshot-at-Nov-26-20-01-28.png

Above data was compiled by hovering the mouse over each data point in the Revenue and Sales graphs on my dashboard and writing down the numbers. Obviously in early years my sales were so low that the data isn't statistically significant.

How do your numbers compare with the $30?

Unfortunately my net revenue per sale data is harder to compile (and would only upset me :() so I haven't bothered with that...

PS. The vast majority of my images are RM, and I haven't restricted PU, NU or distributor sales. Most are also Alamy exclusive and taken in UK.

  • M.Chapman changed the title to Average Gross revenue/sale trends?

A downward trend for me but still over the average of $30:

Average Gross Sale Per Image (rounded up as Alamy tends to do)

2012 -- $91

2013 -- $79

2014 -- $81

2015 -- $69

2016 -- $58

2017 -- $50

2018 -- $48

2019 -- $48

2020 -- $44

2021-- $38*

*due mainly to more tiddlers and fewer high$$ and $$$ sales

It certainly won't be helping to maintain that mean...

It could be that Alamy ignore Novel Use /Photo Pack 'sales' in their calculations.

Otherwise, if the low priced scheme was having an impact the mean image price would have reduced significantly. If it is not having much effect it does make you wonder if it is worth all the grief that 5c 'sales' bring and the consequent loss of goodwill.

What I think it would be telling to look at, though it would be depressing, is the month on month figure paid into my bank account and how that has changed through the years. That would show not only the reduction in average fees, the reduction in commission. but also reflect the total of sales ( which might potentially have compensated).

My average gross $ per sale is a bit below average, and peaked last year when I had the most $$$ sales. Most of my sales are to the UK, and I'm not in Live News.

2017 24 512 21

I spoke at length about this with my son who is now 32. He knows people who are making money from their photography through Instagram - the whole slow, incremental nature of stock puts him off completely. I did try to get him going with Alamy when he was about 17 - he has a good eye, much more creative than me ( no need to snigger), but just couldn't be bothered with the rigmarole and waiting.

The younger generation are used to getting immediate gratification through 'likes'. A friend of his is getting commissions through Instagram and selling his prints.

He suggested that people are so keen to share their phone pics that they would probably give them away for free - I had to explain that was already a 'thing'.

I don't know if it's a generational issue, but I'm old enough for fundamental changes. I've always valued my work, so I never wanted to sell photos for peanuts. I won't start with that.

my average gross per image from the good old days  to this year so far

2006 257.00
2007 180.00
2008 187.50
2009 63.91
2010 57.67
2011 52.09
2012 49.11
2013 58.30
2014 35.83
2015 30.42
2016 29.04
1017 25.23
2018 23.13
2019 23.27
2020 29.55
2021 30.37

Similar pattern to others with 2018 and 2019 really bad prices for me although things are improving now.

each of the last 6 years has improved on the previous year ( both volume and value of sales) so I am happy with what Alamy is doing for me.

Simple* average result from those who have provided numbers so far (thanks).

Screenshot-at-Nov-27-18-32-37.png

*This isn't a weighted average as it ignores the number of sales from each contributor. i.e. those with the most sales have the same influence on the average result as those with the least. (I did this because not everyone has provided the number of sales in each year).

2013  £76

2014  £65

2015  £124 (inflated by one $$$$ sale)

I joined Alamy in 2017 when license amounts were a bit higher, but I missed the good old days that I read about here.

So far I am pleased with the increase in the number of licenses, so I really can't complain.

I just have to keep uploading more images as much as my health allows and hope for the best.

My gross average price since I joined in 2006 is $40.48 (total income divided by total sales).

Also an interesting number.

So mine is $52.69

This year however: $30

And this (admittedly pretty good) month: $26.65 which is almost 50%: 50.58 % to be precise.

All gross.
