Allan, sorry to hear of your heart issues. Good to hear it wasn’t a major issue. Take it easy next time you walk up the Steep Hill, play safe, no jogging up. Around 4-5 years back my wife noticed she was sometimes missing heart beats. She went to the local A&E, and eventual had probes attached and was put on a tread mill. No problems were found, then she had to wear a device for a while that had probes attached to her, still no issues found. To date the odd missing heart beat has never returned.

I had the sensation of missing heartbeats for a few months after I finished chemotherapy. It actually showed up on electrocardiograms as a cluster of beats. My experience of it was a missing beat. So odd. Anyway, it eventually went away and I was always told it wasn't dangerous.

I think Allan and others are describing palpitations which are symptoms of arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) of which there are numerous types, some harmless and some potentiallly a lot more serious. See the following excellent article and downloadable pdf from the British Heart Foundation.

Best of luck Allan - take it easy.

Spent 12 hours in A&A yesterday 11am to11pm. Asked my neighbour to take me to A&E.  Heart was playing up missing beats then seeming to stop and restart with a bump which actually shook my chest. An awful sensation. I was becoming confused (brain befuddled). This went on from 6.30am to 11am.

Sorry to read this Allan. It must have been quite scary. Take it steady and I’ll look forward to seeing your next batch of pics 🙂

A&E = ER (accident & emergency)

Yes, Stoke, I know what A&E means -- I asked what A&A means.

"Spent 12 hours in A&A yesterday 11am to11pm. Asked my neighbour to take me to A&E."

Was that just a typo?

A&E were very good when I arrived and seen quickly with ECG. It was after that everything went downhill. They were very busy and things just drifted along.

Long story short I was finally seen by a doctor who explained first that I was not in danger of a heart attack and my heart was in relatively good condition so no reason to admit me. "Thank heavens". The so called missed beats etc (my terminology) was being caused by an electrical impulse not reaching the heart causing the sensation I was having. The doctor said I could go on like this without intervention for years but said they are referring me to a specialist clinic which looks after people with this condition and that I may have to have a Pacemaker fitted at a later stage.

The last bit should be in the good news thread but I did not think splitting it would make sense.

From a fit and healthy Allan.

Good to learn that it turned out a lot better than you feared Allan.

The closest I could find on line was health care in the home for disabled people, which doesn't seem to match this case.  Or was it a British joke about the staff being like developmentally disabled people.  Google kept trying to show me bits of a/an usage rules.

Yikes, Allan -- 12 hours! You could have staved to death while you were waiting to get your heart fixed.

I have a neighbour who is also a friend and he took me to the hospital and stayed with me all day even when I asked him to go and get on with his life. I could have called him and asked him to pick me up from the hospital when I was free to go home. He kept me in snacks and there are water dispensers around. The hospital also brought round a food and drink trolley at regular intervals. The patients got the food and drinks free but visitors had to pay.

But yes I did not have much to eat just in case.

Hello Allan. Sorry to read about your adventures. Well done for getting looked at. No really, well done, it's so easy to let things like this drift. 😉👍

It's good to hear you're on their radar now and you will get monitored. From what I've read there is a grade of irregular hearbeat that is just there and has little efect, it just jumps out and says "boo!" sometimes.  My pacemaker is working well. After 6 weeks they turned the power down and the battery now has an estimated life of just over 11 years before replacement is needed. I'm back to my active self and have been able to lose 6kg since November with the aim of being around to need a replacement battery one day!

Just as an aside, Mike Johnson who writes the Online Photographer Blog had his pacemaker fitted today.

All the best Alan, there are so many photographs that still need to be taken, take care.

Nice that they offer food. Sloan-Kettering always has self-serve coffee and tea along with crackers and pretzels. Not good if you are really hungry. The only time I had a wait was when someone had to be given a cancer diagnosis. Everything stops and that person gets the time they need. It's still true that if I'm going for a cancer screening I'm prepared to have it take longer than usual.

Glad you are ok Allan. Things like that can be a bit of a shake-up but it’s good they are now aware of the issue and can monitor it. It’s great you had the support of your neighbour too. I have a mitral valve issue that can cause the feeling of my heart not beating and then suddenly skipping to catch up with itself, which most often occurs during severe migraine headaches. But in itself it is not harmful or requiring action, it just feels weird when it happens. I hope you feel at ease now knowing what it is and you can enjoy being out capturing images again.

Thank you Mr S and Sally.

It was certainly a relief that it was not immediately serious and I can get on with life by shooting more pictures and am still able to climb up Steep Hill in Lincoln.

Glad to hear all went well, Allan. Anything to do with the heart is always scary.

Make sure not to look at your sales figures too often. 🙃

I am more likely to have a heart attack if I get a big value sale these days.

Keep a watch, Allan. Happy it ended well in spite of your long day. Don’t they know frustration can cause heart issues to worsen ? 😁

I had an ablation in 2001 for all sorts of rhythms. Most not so dangerous, one that could be potentially fatal. I’m doing fine with a small twice a day heart med.
