What (not) to shoot ?

Recommended Posts

This morning I thought I might take some shots involving peanut butter, preferably crunchy.  It's cold and grey outside, so an indoor shoot would be good.

I took a look at the existing contributions, over 43,000.  Many excellent images - don't think I'll bother !

Is there any uncharted territory remaining ?

Luckily a lot of clients seem to license up to date imagery. A lot of images will get dated after a few years, especially e.g. technology pictures. So you can always license 'well covered' subjects or you can revisit older subjects in your portfolio.

Uncharted? Yes, concept shots. Which AI will kill...

Bryan, you're also missing another important point - unlike travel or news images, there are many photo buyers that use different pictures of the same foods frequently. For example, a company that make the machinery for packing peanut butter into jars will need dozens of peanut butter images a year.

As for uncharted territory, well, most of stock photography needs constant updating. Even classic travel shots like Big Ben or the Staten Island Ferry change - or perhaps the area around them changes.

You have to have a dog in the race to win so-to-speak. I have sold a photo of the Arc de Triumphe in Paris before now… super saturated subject, my photo didn’t particularly stand out from the crowd.. but still it got a sale.

So I say take those photos of peanut butter, upload them…. You never know! If nothing else you keep the Alamy search algorithm happier with having some new content.

Well, following the advice above, I've warped out the jar of crunchy peanut butter and tomorrow will take a few shots.  I'm pleased to note that Sainsburys have recently switched from plastic to glass for their containers, could that be a new angle ?

I'm surprised that photo hasn't sold before now Steve, it might do now that it has had some exposure here !

Specifically related to peanut butter?  I dont know.   Elsewhere - certainly.  I mostly shoot wildlife/nature and mainly put my B roll and images that don't fit into the project I'm working on up on Alamy.  I live in a densely populated part of the US, and I'm often surprised to see that the images I upload are not uncommonly the only ones on Alamy of a particular species or among a handful. Sometimes its even very common stuff.  When I travel, thats even more frequently the case.  And they do sell.   Now, whether thats a good way to make an income is less clear - they are not always easy to find or require significant time investment. But I'd still be doing with or without Alamy.

Steve, I'm totally confused here. Did you add the type for this thread, or is it this way on Alamy?

Hi Brian,

Yes it’s like this on Alamy. It’s a genuine spoon with those words printed on it. I found it in a local charity shop, bought it, and decided to use it with a jar of peanut butter.

Good grief! Horrifying.

And why is the peanut butter jar so small?

A heaping tablespoon of peanut butter straight from the jar would have worked better.

Steve did write that the text was actually on the spoon itself, so a heaping spoonful would have covered up the writing.  I agree that the jar seems a bit small...maybe the U.S. jars are much bigger.

the number of uncovered subjects is infinitely greater than the number of covered subjects...

peanut butter = 61400+
peanut butter celery = 209

I thought Elvis ate all the peanut butter.

Ah The Elvis!

Funny that the original didn't have baked banana in it nor honey or maple syrup. I thought adding those was genius.

The original had 1 jar of peanut butter in each sandwich. As this lady in her instructional video says, together with the jar of blueberry jam and the 1 lb of bacon and the 1 lb loaf of bread it makes for a 4 pounder sandwich. Who thought the 520 Cal Quarter Pounder was big?

Did you ever have The Elvis Sandwich  in the Village?

Did I say Elvis was right? He was. OK it may have killed him. But that was one and a half year later.

The plastic containers replacing glass is definitely an angle to explore.

Ive recently been back in the UK touring the South coast of England, surprised myself by finding quite a few unchartered territory shots, new businesses is one example, different angle to shoot well known subjects, changing weather conditions. Plus I am finding a lot of image sales that seem to come from the buyer searching by newest

I sometimes search for food related items - before shooting images of some items on supermarket shelves

There are quite a few areas with less than 500 images, Vegemite, Eccles cakes and surprising walkers shortbread biscuits

The deed has been done. A useful by product, I discovered that peanut butter on toast goes well with my wife's homemade soup.

Can someone remind me where the list of 'prohibited' items to photograph is located? I seem to remember there was a list of various things that were off limits. Am I imagining it or was there something more tangible?

There also was a list of things that would not turn up when someone was not logged in. But those are all present when a client is logged in.

It's mostly just a bit annoying. Except when someone does a Google search and clicks on a result only to be met with something like are you sure you used the right word, because we don't have any images for your search. This was mainly things like sh*t and a**e, but some weird things also happened: there are no Morris Minors on Alamy when you come from Google and are not logged in. Nor people named D*ck. Like Philip K. or Turpin or Tricky.

All posts about this have been removed btw, so searching here is in vain.

It is a nice family game on a long winter night though.
