That's a shock, I thought it was a joke at first. I didn't even know that Amazon owned it but it's a fantastic resource and from their statement it looks as if they intend to take it down completely before too long, you'd think that Amazon could find some cheap hosting. Needs more money to spend on rockets I suppose.

Shame. I have used it in the past up to fairly recently. STUFF amazon. I have not bought anything through them for some time since they did me an injustice.

Nothing surprises me during the current economic climate.

True. I moved my stock IRA (S&P & a handful of medical companies)  into a Money Market account yesterday, and my savings into a 1 year CD. Both protected. Not a lot of money in either, but all I have. Some analysts are saying we could not go into a recession, but a depression. Stocks are very volatile.

I'm certainly getting a bit hacked off with these US oligarchs messing around with things that have taken an inordinate amount of time and effort to get right, Twitter is a disaster zone these days. Why such short notice I wonder and why not try to find a buyer, it's such and extraordinarily powerful brand.

I think that it's more that he wants it to reflect his own extremist views. On a practical front I actually follow all 3 of the Alamy Twitter accounts but I never see them now even though I choose the 'Following' option rather than 'For you'.

This is horrible news. In an era where getting physical access to products of all kinds before purchasing is getting harder by the day, the availability of expert and independent opinion is of massive importance. Such expert and independent opinion is in very short supply in the customer reviews system of on-line retailers in general. It would take a measure of paranoia to believe that Amazon is closing down this operation in order to further dominate the agenda of which products sell and which don't, but that would be an understandable interpretation of their actions.

I'm not sure what can be done. I can't cancel my Prime membership because I have for a long time boycotted Amazon anyway. If some enlightened individual or organisation were to buy-out DPReview, I for one, would be happy to pay a 'Which? - like' subscription to access their archives and ongoing research.

What a huge loss. I always went there when buying new equipment and wanted good information in making my choices.

Yes, the image comparison tools, where you could compare what you'd get out of various sets of kit, were really useful.

It wouldn't even make the smallest of dents in Amazon's finances to keep everything as is in a read-only state and hosted as a useful resource. I think they have dropped the ball here.

They are astonishingly useful, and you can download the files, RAW as well. They must take ages to do.

Sad loss. Maybe some of the (very knowledgable) staff, who are presumably being made redundant, will start a new site?

I haven't looked thoroughly but I have seen various individuals on Twitter offering to buy it, this is just part of 18,000 redundancies on Amazon. I would definitely see a future for it, possibly with a subscription as Joseph suggests, I hope so. It's a trusted brand worldwide and that archive of reference material is such a valuable resource.

It looks like DPReview TV will continue on Petapixel, I rarely looked at that though.

He's surprisingly phlegmatic about it "It's been a great 25 years for http://DPReview.com but all good things must end.", but then he's still got a job.

They expected people to use the links to Amazon for purchases, but I suspect most sophisticated buyers went directly to the stores we'd known for years.   I don't think I ever bought camera gear through Amazon.

The two guys, one of them Nicolls, are going to PetaPixels.

I have bought one lens from Amazon. It was not available, on back order at all my usual online stores but I watched Amazon & they got a few copies in. The price was the lowest of any of the stores I usually ordered from & I had no problems with delivery. It was perfect.

Oh, Harry, I see you already posted the Petapixel news.

As far as Amazon goes…after my back surgery, I couldn’t go shopping. I did order groceries from local stores, & picked them up. Just unloading the car & putting them away was monumental.

There were many things I needed/wanted over my recovery time that I ordered from Amazon & don’t know what I would have done without it. I never had any screwups like you, Ed. Maybe it’s Amazon/UK that is not so good, who knows. The worst that happened to me was a delay in delivery, only a couple of times, through one or other of their vendors. If the goods are something they have in their warehouses, no problem. Yet.
