Hi

I'm a light contributor.  Just slightly baffled by my last sale, which was $0.36 for a passport photo.

Details of sale are:

Country: Worldwide
Usage: Editorial, Use in syndicated editorial news features, single context only. Novel Use
Media: Newspaper - national
34 MB
3000 x 4000 pixels
1 MB compressed
Print run: Unlimited
Placement: National
Image Size: Any size
Start: 17 May 2024
Duration: Unlimited

Question is, how is it possible for the buyer to receive such use of a photo for so little?  worldwide, unlimited, national newspaper, unlimited run ?  up to now, the lowest sale i've had is just over a dollar.

Thanks

Raz

Are you in novel use?

Alamy also offer discounted image packs, similar to microstock.

No, it's not great. Yes, seems there is nothing the original stock agencies can do to stop things moving in that direction.

Thanks Steve.  Yes, appears I am in Novel Use.  Can't undo that til next April.

A sale is a sale, I guess.  I sold my first +$100 image a month ago, so I think its the stark contrast of this that baffles me.  But unlimited newspapers worldwide.... :(

Congrats on your first $100 license. Low prices, get used to it. Trend seems to be ever downwards. You may find license numbers improve as prices drop, but scant consolation.

This appears to be one of appalling PA Media 'deals' that I had hoped Alamy had scrapped.

You will quite likley find your image used in dozens and dozens of UK local and regional newspapers illustrating an article written by a PA journalist.

the good news...
you are on the way to getting hundreds & hundreds of tearsheets
which will get you dozens & dozens of privileges includes
press passes to The Olympics, Manchester United home games,
worldwide brunches hosted by varied prime ministers...
(look for business class round trip tickets attached to emails)

What baffles me is why sales like this qualify as "Novel Use"? Aren't they just editorial use licenses with "novel" (i.e. super low) prices? This is why I opted out of NU years ago...

The only 'good news' comes from finding, then monetising, the copyright infringments that result from such widespread distribution.

Sad but true that I make more from infringements than from Alamy licenses.

  • 2 months later...

Just had the identical use as the OP for an image with my net working out to be $0.15!

So this continues and heading towards the dire prices the first agency I uploaded images to before Alamy beginning with S that I'm not supposed to name.

Do Alamy still reckon $35 is the average gross?

8 images with an average gross of $9.46 to date this month.

Far better than the micros admittedly but for how long?

Does anyone in the UK get anywhere near this? I don't.

Maybe in America

$20 is my average gross so far this year.

I'm opted out Novel use and distribution in some territories (opted out of China, Hong Kong, India, Belarus & Russian Federation)

2024 for me = $38.26 avg/gross

I was out of Novel use, but I opted in this month so I can track if there is any negative or positive impact in my numbers during the second half of the year. I'll report back once the year is over.
