vpics
Evening everyone, Just compared my sales prices from 2011 to 2015. I've reached the same number of sales for both years (2015 still counting, obviously) and thought to share it with you. Average sales price 2011 - $89.85, lowest: a novel use for 83 cents and a web use for $7.80, highest: indoor display for $561. Average sales price 2015 - $82.54, lowest: UK website use for $6.02, highest: book sales for $250. The average appears to be quite high. Does anyone else have figures to compare? John Mitchell
2011 -- $77 average price 2014 -- $84 average price (best year on Alamy, sales and income-wise) 2015 -- $64 average (very slow year so far)
Martin P Wilson
2002 $118 2003 $146 2004 $113 2005 $98 2006 $135 2007 $154 2008 $123 2009 $87 2010 $83 2011 $41 2012 $65 2013 $40 2014 $59 2007-8 were my best income years, almost identical but only slightly better than 2003. Bear in mind from 2010 onwards I was being more selective, reduced similars and hgher technical standards. I was submitting more frequently - perhaps I should just put up occasionally and let them mature, it semed to work relatively well in the past. I have just charted that average sales value and the trendline suggests that prices are down to 40% over that period. That said the numbers are not really sufficient to be statistically significant. Arletta
2011-61,41$ 2012-18,65$ (better not comment ) 2013-71,73$ (best year, regular sales started) 2014-35,58$ 2015-56,48$ (so far) So, vpics, I wish I could have your numbers!
John Mitchell
I've found that the average price per image has remained surprisingly steady over the years (I started submitting in 2007). However, licenses (for Chuck) on both the high and the really low ends (not in NU or newspaper thingy) have all but dried up. Most sales are in the middle now. Another trend I've noticed during the past couple of years is declining distributor sales, which I guess is both a good and a bad thing.
Armstrong
Another trend I've noticed during the past couple of years is declining distributor sales, which I guess is both a good and a bad thing. I recently watched the Ask James videos and this was covered there. If I remember correctly (and apologies to Alamy if I'm not) it was said that distribution sales were declining. Videos are here but I can't remember which it was : http://bit.ly/1BQM7Dr Michael

Martin P Wilson
Curious - are these the average gross licence prices, or your average take home price (your cut) from them. Thanks. Mine were gross for comparison puurposes, as we are looking at sales prices and commissions have reduced at least twice while I have been here. So I was getting 70% in 2002/3 and 50% now which makes the decline look even worse
vpics
Quite right, Martin, I forgot that we had a change in commissions. Oh, depressing.

AlbertSnapper
average gross $ according to Dashboard Year 20 and.... 05 $170 06 $85 07 $90 08 $305 09 $87 10 $69 11 $60 12 $36 13 $27 14 $40 15 $35 Never did the Novel Use thing, but in newspaper sub scheme, and all distro territories (but very few nowadays. Last 80 licences, just 1 distributor). Bryan's statement above applies to me as well ! Now licensing 5-10 images a month here, from 3300 images. To make it pay... don't keep spending money on newer/additional camera kit. And don't spend on travel (unless you walk, or think to yourself 'if I didn't have my camera, would I still go there anyway'). Try and keep it profitable. Thankfully my other photography work is more profitable !
Arletta
Now it's clear to see that about 2010 yr there was some big breakthrought (turning point?). What happened then? My thinking is - that was the time when A. opened doors to many photographers with abandon interpolation (upsizing) images. If I remember correct before 2010 you had to pomp images up, right? Many people didn't know how to do it, it made confusions, that was their barrier to cross so they didn't join... So, when A. let easy upload, there happend the flood of newcomers. I believe this is the reason why your cut is smaller, you must share the cake with more artists, right? Any other thoughts about why there was that big pricing twist? To my eyes it looks like the drop off occurred in 2008. A World Economic collapse. In the UK we had the banking collapse. I can imagine that was a very big factor in the dropping sales prices. At those times companies slashed budgets and non essential spending was cut right back. This would have effected marketing budgets etc hugely. A situation of the demand suddenly dropping and supply continuing to increase. It's basic economics that the prices would drop. We're still seeing the effects of that crash in the economies of the World. As for our average image price...as any retailer knows once prices become low it's very hard to get them back up again. Betty LaRue
I'll only give these two figures. Average sale price per image for 2008, my first year to register sales, was $124.95. My average sale price last year was $70.14. The other notable thing is this. Most of us have increased our image count. I think I had about 500 images by the end of 2008. Last year, well over 2000. So with a lot fewer images to choose from, I averaged better prices. My yearly income, in spite of more images, keeps dropping. Due to: dropping prices, unable to keep up with image count in relation to Alamy's image count percentage wise, and a lot of not being able to keep up is too much time in the sin bin, keeping me on a treadmill instead of having forward movement with my image count. The harder I pedal, the farther behind I get. Betty
