Would anyone recommend fixation for lens repair or should I go straight to Nikon UK?

Go straight to Nikon.  My 14-24 was damaged when a tripod failed, sent it back to Nikon and it came back as new.  Now it was over €600 to get the damn thing repaired, but well worth it.

Thanks. I've had repairs by Nikon before and as you say, very expensive but satisfactorily repaired. Just wondered if fixation were competitive or whether to stick with expensive Nikon?

I don't know Fixation being in Canada, but I had a recent experience that may be relevant. My everyday zoom was damaged and the zoom ring was jammed, so I had the world's first 115-120mm zoom. Nikon's price was $900 to repair a $1400 lens. They wanted to replace an entire optical element set, rather than dismantle and repair it. I contacted a local, well reputed, camera repair outfit. They charged me $40 for an estimate which would be deducted from the bill if I had the repair done. Their estimate - $200, for a deeper dismantle and replace a screw that had got bent on impact. So I would definitely contact Fixation and describe the problem. It may not be that complex.

Have you tried A J Johnstone in Glasgow? I've had lots of repairs there and am happy with them. In fact, picked up a repaired lens from them this morning. They're Nikon authorised repairers (as well as Canon).

I have used FIxation a few times and they are absolutely reliable. As someone said they are authorised Nikon repairers and have been repairing Nikon kit for a long time. They were bought by Wex which was subsequently merged with Calumet but they have a separate identity. The Fixation premises is old school with excellent service and a definite feeling of reliability and trustworthiness. I live 45 minutes by train from London so pop in there if I need an occasional sensor clean. On the one occasion I needed a repair I got a quote and the camera was repaired to as new condition for a reasonable price. I would highly recommend them. Not sure I would recommend a trip from Glasgow though so Cryptoprocta's suggestion is probably very sensible.

I haven't used Fixation but if it helps confidence-wise they're one of Nikon Uk's authorised service centres and they're part of the WEX group.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll try AJ J, I like seeing the whites of peoples eyes when they're taking my money.  ;) Cheers everyone. :)

Fixation are excellent they've got me out of trouble a few times but appreciate you being a long way away it may be more difficult for you.  As said also good for sensor cleaning but again a train ride away for me to get there.  Nikon are also good but probably take a bit longer, you leave your gear there, wait for them to send you a quote by email, accept it and wait for another email to say it's done, unless anything has changed of course.

Do not hesitate, all my Nikon bodies, lenses and accessories for any issues go to them - they are first class and very helpful

Just to keep the record straight Fixation not only repair Canon and Nikon cameras they also repair Sony and Fuji cameras.

They also repair Canon and Nikon lenses and Sony lenses too. But for some reason unknown to me they do not repair Fuji lenses.

No I do not have any connection with Fixation nor have I had to use them yet.

I think they only started doing Fuji stuff recently so maybe this will be something for the future. They only started doing Sony stuff last year and I think Fuji is even more recent. This is highly specialised work and I expect it takes quite a lot of training to repair any of this kit to manufacturer standard. They are authorised repairers for all of these brands so the standard should be high. As far as I know, they have different staff for different brands. The company was started originally by a guy who had worked for Nikon and they only did Nikon for a long time. And I do not have any connection to Fixation either but I am always happy to give a good review or recommendation when I receive excellent service which I have done there.

Being in the US, I have no idea but I'm lucky that my two Nikon repairs were done for free. The first was a jammed kit zoom lens for my D70 still under warranty (an 18-70mm I think - it was long time ago). The second was a failed shutter on my D700 just after the warranty ended. They fixed it for free anyway and they had just stopped doing most repairs at their Melville, Long Island (NY) location but as a favor they let me ship it there overnight anyway (I'm a couple hours away) rather than to the west coast and rushed the job since I desperately needed the camera. I was still a relative newbie and had sold my D70 so I didn't have a backup camera. That convinced me to always have a backup. After the prices you are quoting, I realize I got off really cheap just paying for shipping!

Another top notch repairer is H Lehmann at Stoke on Trent, over the years they've fixed cameras, lenses and flashguns on my behalf.
Excellent outfit, fast too....

Being based in Stoke-on-Trent I have used them several times as well, always being excellent service - although they couldn't fix my 5d Mk III and lens when I dropped it in a pond...….

Yaaaaay! Glad it worked out for you! They tend to under-promise and over-deliver on times, (better than the other way round!) but that's remarkable!

hmmm- sent my D7200 body to them on the 8th August - still waiting.  To be fair though, I had an email from them on the  4th Sept saying it was 'awaiting spares' so it might not be their fault that it's taking so long.  Still, five weeks and counting....
