Odd that it's still on the front page. That image is being used to illustrate an item in the 'Times Earth' rolling feature/campaign. It didn't appear until midday so I guess they have rolled it over to today as well to give it full exposure. As the Times Earth feature is ongoing it may stay there for a while. I haven't yet seen today's print version so I don't know if it will appear there too. I think it also indicates the considerable challenge involved in reporting images used on a news website which is updated several times a day. Not only are new items added but there is also the possibility of images illustrating a particular article being replaced by another.
