Major acquisition announced

Recommended Posts

look what I found... With a $ 20 Tumblr template and three hours later, Unsplash was born with 10 images and a link to the Crew website. Mikael shared the newly created directory on the HackerNews forum - Unsplash quickly registered 50,000 visitors. Three years later, the platform records 3 downloads per second - there is a map where you can follow all the activity, including new photos and tastes, in real time. From 2015 to 2016 alone, the number of downloads increased by 200% and the time spent looking for the right image grew by 140%.

Is it possible that Getty acquired it just to ultimately shut it down?

Could be, or a more complex model where they incorporate it, reduce the number of images available and offer Getty paid images linked in as part of the platform "if that wasn't quite what you were looking for here's some similar ones from the Getty library" - for a fee.

As Getty has higher standards than Unsplash they could easily justify a huge edit purge  with work that doesn't reach their QC standard

They said that back when Getty bought iStock.

More likely that it is yet another 'exciting new opportunity' for photographers.

I think that you have to do lots of peering under rocks and second-guessing what both brands' plans are.

Advertising is one area: Unsplash Brands

... but they might want to shut this down (or add fees, perhaps?): Unsplash Hire

Whatever G plan to do, we'll probably know in ~6 months, once they open up about their plans. Whatever those are, I can't see anything positive about it.

This has been done in print for years -- press releases that are basically product placement: International Living, various others, who find the wonderful undiscovered bargains, quaint little local cafes with 95% tourists.  It doesn't look like a paid ad, so people read them, and the places publishing them don't have disclaimers.  Couple of places, even some relatively well-known web magazines, don't pay writers, so they have a high percentage of product placement pieces.   So, people pay to have their product placement photos up at a free download site.
