one image out of 58 million

Recommended Posts

The other day I was checking the search results of my images in Alamy Measures. To my amazement, one customer's search with two keywords brought up only one image which was mine. One image out of near 58 million images on Alamy! It was quite amusing. Hope this leads to a sale. (Maybe I jinxed it now.)

Similar experience a few month ago, two keywords search resulted in 2 images, one of which was mine. The image was eventually sold but for a very small amount. Better than nothing but it was a little bit disappointing.

Similar experience from anyone?

I have a monopoly for a couple of searches, with all the images on Alamy, but not an Alamywhack as such.

They've never come to a sale directly as far as I can see, but since a sale can take a year and be unzoomed, who knows?

My lowest sale this month ($17) was from a search that had yielded only four results. My two highest licenses ($250 each) were of images chosen from many pages of results. It seems that while scarcity might still increase the likelihood of making a sale, it doesn't necessarily command a higher fee these days.

I've had three sales to date where I'm the only supplier on Alamy for a specific subject (OK, garden plant).  I've also had a reasonable number of zoomed images recently where the search has yielded less than 5 results, mine included. It probably pays to be a specialist but the downside is I don't get many views and the returns don't reflect the scarcity of the subjects.  But that's the nature of general stock photography.

Sold this image of a "Wendigo" recently. Search turns up total of 3 images.

Ironically my selling image did not qualify for the Creative section. The single image of the 3 that did qualify for Creative, had nothing to do with a/the "Wendigo".

I have  few Alamywhacks or near-run-things and I used to perk up when I found one had been zoomed thinking that was surely going to develop into a sale. But not very often, which again makes one wonder how this thing works. Bill Brooks and I share an Alamywhack (if that's not a contradiction of terms). I'm not going to be specific but it's in Southern Ontario and not that remote. So I did a few general searches and found the answer: They've built a visitor centre over it and posted "No Photography" notices about. And they shut down for the winter.  Reminds me of the line in that song about cutting down the trees, building a museum and charging a dollar just to see 'em.

I don't think either Bill or myself are getting rich from our few shots

The other way to get Alamywhacks is for the building to burn down after you have your shots. Promise I'm no arsonist, but there was a time I specialised in haunted houses and poltergeists.

one image out of 58 million....

.........and I'd like to think that no other library has an image of the same subject/topic either.

That's why I like this place. Alamy reaches the parts that other libiaries dare to venture !
