Lots of dopamine from my little project “Ghost Wolves of Galveston Island”. I do not know who made this term. Either scientists trying to attract more grant funds to their research, or journalists who were describing those studies. The point is that ghost genes of the nearly extinct red wolf (Canis rufus) were found in populations of coyotes along the gulf coast, as a result of natural hybridization. However, another paper from a well established research group said that there is only one wolf species in North America, the gray wolf (Canis lupus) whereas the red wolf never existed as a species but was a result of hybridization between gray wolves and coyotes (AKA coy-wolves). Nevertheless, it was a great fun to work with these guys. The goal was to show them in the natural environment of sand dunes (and dunes were the only place where I could put them against the sky), at night as they are nocturnal, and make something “ghosty”… Now have many similars, but I rather have them than do not.
