Does nobody monitor the News Feed any more?

I have no problem with local or 'weak' news, whatever that is. I once sold a pic to the Telegraph of the bank holiday rubber duck race held on the stream in the next village. News is news, be it local or international.

It's the endless pictures - often from Chinese news agencies, but not always - of mobile phone screens with nothing newsworthy AT ALL on them.
 https://www.alamy.com/news/newsresults.aspx?qt=l#BHM=foo%3Dbar%26qt%3D%26pn%3D1%26ps%3D120%26aoa%3D1%26news%3D%26sports%3D%26entmt%3D%26Videos%3D%26bb%3D1%26md%3DOL23628934%26dt%3D%26gid%3D{B629B723-C384-4B5E-8B41-9D8C26F60318}%26destxml%3D%26imglst%3D%26orderby%3DDT%26newsseq%3D%26userid%3D{173C1BC7-D93A-43C2-A48C-B5EB9221055B}%26rand%3D1693845348218

or 'Office block seen in Shanghai' as if the fact is was 'seen' makes it newsworthy

or pictures of trains - very nice stock shots but with NO news value whatsoever  https://www.alamy.com/news/newsresults.aspx?qt=l#BHM=foo%3Dbar%26qt%3D%26pn%3D1%26ps%3D120%26aoa%3D1%26news%3D%26sports%3D%26entmt%3D%26Videos%3D%26bb%3D1%26md%3DOL23628336%26dt%3D%26gid%3D{AED9BE9F-FE8C-47D5-9962-A4A2EA2801D2}%26destxml%3D%26imglst%3D%26orderby%3DDT%26newsseq%3D%26userid%3D{173C1BC7-D93A-43C2-A48C-B5EB9221055B}%26rand%3D1693845476614

Also, today's highlight, the same 5 photos repeated 63 times in one submission. It may not be the photographer's fault but if anyone at Alamy was even casting a cursory glance at the news feed now and then this would be spotted and put right https://www.alamy.com/news/newsresults.aspx?qt=l#BHM=foo%3Dbar%26qt%3D%26pn%3D1%26ps%3D120%26aoa%3D1%26news%3D%26sports%3D%26entmt%3D%26Videos%3D%26bb%3D1%26md%3DOL23626272%26dt%3D%26gid%3D{B0C2B745-67EB-4203-90E6-9AC8DB616E1B}%26destxml%3D%26imglst%3D%26orderby%3DDT%26newsseq%3D%26userid%3D{173C1BC7-D93A-43C2-A48C-B5EB9221055B}%26rand%3D1693845530572

Yes, reportage is basically stock, with the 'news and reportage' category selected.

It's advantages are the 600 character caption and it can appear for sale quicker than stock. I don't believe the Alamy quality disclaimer re 'imperfections' affects sales as very few are zoomed, the same goes for lapsed live news. Quite a few lapsed live news are also good repeat sellers.

'weak' news

For me it means that it is not a hard and fast 'heavy' (😉) news item. So, something that is an interesting event, perhaps, without being ground breaking ...

But yeah - I feel your pain. It's frustrating, though I have to say I rarely look.

Usually the only time I take a peak at the live news feed is shortly after I've uploaded to see if my images of an event were uploaded first. I strive to but its not always possible.

Dear Phil,

The Scotland Yard pictures in 'news' today are there *by mistake* 🥴

Have never chosen the wrong portal before, but seems today is a first.

(I blame the heat).

Not sure they even fit 'stock', but hey, why not ....

Please don't highlight them as 'not news' 🙏

I totally agree they are not ...

(PS - spot the loiterers ... )

Loading to the wrong portal happens.  Done it twice.  Can't blame the heat so it must have been another senior moment.

Doesn't explain some of the agency stuff though.

Don't worry, I've given up on that - a thankless task.

My point is that in the past they would have been spotted by Alamy within minutes and you'd have got a friendly email advising you that they had been removed as they didn't quite fit the requirements of the News Feed.

Not any more.

That's a shame ... I've looked in the news feed and they are not there, but were accepted immediately. Maybe someone read my email to the news feed apologising profusely, and then moved them ...

PS - it seems they've (very kindly) been sent into 'reportage' ... 😅

None of the following have ANYTHING to do with news.
Why do we bother?

(There are many more but I'd had enough...)

Could somebody at Alamy PLEASE give us the new guidelines for what can and can't be uploaded to the news feed as they have clearly changed beyond all recognition.

You could perhaps also tell the foreign agencies you distribute for like Imago, Sipa and Xinhua (amongst others) that the Live News feed is not simply a shortcut for submitting ordinary stock with much longer captions.

Thanks in advance.

Image 2RY828G showing 2 German Aldi signs partially obscured by tree leaves is fit for nothing, let alone Live News. At least we can be sure such images wouldn't be pushed to picture desks. It doesn't look good, I can understand your frustration. I suspect no action is taken due to a lack of resources, there logically can't be any other reason.

A cat resting, a plate of currywurst and a head shot of a pigeon in Chile.

A picture of chickens with the caption "Sometimes I just want to be a chicken like in that evergreen from grandmothers time New Hampshire chickens how to dig so you lie"
More chicken pictures with the captions..
"There she lies in full glory buried in her sandy nest New Hampshire hen a nice back"

"The dear good feathered fowl takes every opportunity for a cozy nap feathered fowl all sleeps one wakes up"

"Digging and being awake is one thing, a healthy nap is another feathering in action before sleep"

Are there no staff at Alamy?

Firstly (and perhaps surprisingly, coming from me) a word in defence of some of these foreign agency uploads, particularly dpa.

The way news works and is illustrated works very differently in some countries to how UK newspapers work and illustrate news.  dpa supply a huge chunk of Germany newspapers, because so many are syndicated, and some take 80+% of images from dpa. They rarely, almost never illustrate news in the typical British tabloid or even broadsheet style (and frankly, these days the T'graph, Times and Guardian are not only no longer in broadsheet format, but they aren't hugely quality driven any more either, but that is another story). Whilst UK newspapers will print a lot of typically quite "in your face" news, protests, politics, general interest, art etc. in bold style, including a lot of people shots of general public, German newspapers are rather more restrained and cautious, or boring if you like. (yeah, I know Bild doesn't, but..). The front pages of the mainstream "serious" papers will often feature very bland images, even graphs, illustrations, or stock-ey type pictures, general public is often seen either as semi-blurred via long exposure or even from behind, things that are usually a bit of a no-no when we file news pics here. Politicians and people of public interest are shown ,of course, but even those pics are rarely as creative and vibrant as we shoot them over here. And a lot of news stories get illustrated with stock type images that fit the theme but aren't new images from that day. Some of this is because of privacy/rights issues, some is cultural.

BUT - I fully agree that doesn't justify that all of their stuff comes in as news on the newsfeed. Especially if it's from dpa picture alliance, rather than dpa news agency/staff photographers. A lot of rubbish gets fed into dpa pic alliance.

Ditto with a lot of the "daily life" and other non-news images that come in from the Asian agencies. Some are absolute rubbish, some are beautiful, but stock. My gripe is not so much that they're sent in as news, but that they're sent in without any context, and often in single images, clogging the feed. The daily life in xyt is fine if it is then at least grouped together and filed under weather or similar, these do often go in as picture fodder for Times News in Pictures and the like (especially the gazillion drone images that always seem to come in from China, where there are seemingly no restrictions...often beautifully shot. Is it ethical? Probably not, but the Times etc. will use them anyway for their online galleries that pay next to nothing, they don't seem to have any real quality threshold for online pictures of the day galleries these days).

But why do these agencies not at least have to follow the same rules we do? Imago is the latest example. A very large agency. Like Alamy, there's a bit of news, but mostly they are a giant stock image pot. For the last few weeks, they have been pushing thousands of images a day on to the news feed, often as single images. Some actual news (premieres, entertainment, politics), some 157% stock. And not just during the night, as Sipa and Zuma and all these cheap mass image-producers usually do, but during the day. Randomly.

Why are they not reprimanded for that at all, when it happens all day, every day, for weeks and months? Is Alamy really that desperate to ramp up the stock image collection via any means and from any source, no matter what quality or if they are even captioned?

The same goes for the quality of news images accepted onto the feed from UK contributors, btw. A lot of uncropped, uncentered, un-whitebalanced sets are accepted from the same people who have been doing that for years and have got away with it for years, they know better, they don't care because Alamy lets them get away with it.

Quality was yesterday.

Meh.

You could perhaps also tell the foreign agencies you distribute for like Imago, Sipa and Xinhua (amongst others) that the Live News feed is not simply a shortcut for submitting ordinary stock with much longer captions.

Thanks in advance.

Nothing yet...

A great and so true expression, it made me smile.

Sadly, I struggle to smile about it these days, as much as I'd like to. This is my job, all day, every day. And it is being made increasingly hard and unjoyful, not to mention unrewarding.

Meanwhile, Imago (and others, but Imago appear particularly active at the mo) continue to spam the news feed day and night, all day, every day.

I know nobody cares any more, but once again, the news feed is cluttered with single image stock uploads by IMAGO. And they even state that they're not news, most of the images are dated several weeks back, and are totally irrelevant to any current new stories. Shambles. They do it every single day, and it's been going on for weeks now.

Hate to have to write this, but "If you have to ask what is NEWS, you should not be uploading to the feed."  What I have written is STRICTLY my own opinion.

I have also spent over 40 years covering news events for news photo agencies around the world.  Current events are very difficult and require skilled professionals who know what they are doing, reporting.  I do have a small problem with several agency (organization) contributors that I do not believe live up to the journalistic standards that I was taught in J school.

I'm not asking what news is Chuck, I am being as sarcastic as I possibly can to point out that the News Feed itself seems to have forgotten.
You mention news events / current events - yes, that is exactly what SHOULD be on the news feed. Have you had a look at it recently?

If you don't know what news is you probably shouldn't be uploading to the feed, but your uploads certainly shouldn't be ACCEPTED on the feed, to bury the real news under endless images of mobile phone screens, buildings "seen" in China and dozens of pics of supermarket shelves with no news value whatsoever.

Hi Alamy

Would it be possible to split the news tab and have two, one for UK news and the other for International news and therefore separate out the multiple posts from overseas if nothing is planned to be done about this?

Kind regards

Elaine

Phil,

The question about Alamy providing what is news was raised by several people in this thread, sorry I had not meant to be directing my response to you.

FYI:  I go through the LIVE NEWS (LN) feed several times a day, not only on Alamy, but on a number of News Photo agencies.  Several of the regular contributors

to the LN feed were encouraged to join Alamy by me.  While I agree with a lot of what you wrote, I don't see the point of stating it publicly on the Forum. When I have a complaint about Alamy (not very often).  I do it directly to Alamy.

Rethinking the above, WOW, Today, 28/10, I agree with Phil.  The "dumping of second rate, poorly captioned images" on the news feed does need to be dealt with by Alamy.  Any news photo editor would not appreciate being feed the stuff I am seeing on Live News.
