spacecadet Posted November 20, 2013 Share Posted November 20, 2013 I'm not sure there is any advice apart from the obvious. For example, there are only a few pix from a trip to the UAE. I have 500 (about 80 per day) and have made sales from them. Unless you were only there for a few hours you could have covered it in much more breadth. John Gaffen Posted November 20, 2013 Share Posted November 20, 2013 To a greater extent you have answered your own question Jules, as personally speaking, I find the stock photography business to be a numbers game. Your portfolio, by Alamy standards, is still quite small. Your sales will increase as you upload more and more images! I have over 4000 images, but some photographers here on Alamy have way more than that! Yes the image quality and composition etc. are important. Having an eclectic varied choice of subject helps. As sometimes, the most unexpected or mundane subjects/topics will bring a sale. Variety of subject and a large portfolio (e.g. being a generalist), seem to be the way to generate more sales. No doubt, other photographers on Alamy might have a slightly different take on this, but I'm sure they would all recommend to you that your portfolio needs to be bigger. PS I've been trying to post this for some time, but I upgraded my browser to MS Explorer 11, and it will not let me cut and past from word at the moment, so I had to use Chrome instead! Phil Preston Posted November 20, 2013 Share Posted November 20, 2013 Between 2005 and 2012, I had approx 150 images on Alamy, and had 10 sales during that time, so just over one sale per year, only slightly ahead of your reported performance. icon Posted November 21, 2013 Share Posted November 21, 2013 i wonder the same as you. for what its worth i have 6 sales from nov 2011 ---- oct 2013. im just now waiting for a payout, broke the $100 barrier. oh yea, i had abt 80 or so pics (less actually) at the time. hope this it helps. BTW: keywors, keywords, keywords! they are just as important then your pics. could be more, caues you could have the best pic out there of a worm at sunset... but in no one can find it, it wont sell. I haven't even reached the threshold yet to get my first payment. Tough question to answer. But finding a niche (or niches) of some kind can really help IME. Of course the niche has to be one that photo buyers are interested in. I see a lot of similar UK subjects on Alamy. There seem to be ample pictures of pubs, the lake district, steam locomotives, etc. Personally, I don't think it's as much of a numbers game as it used to be. Bryan Posted November 21, 2013 Share Posted November 21, 2013 When you first start with Alamy, so the story goes, you are allocated a medium rank, so that if you have the good fortune to have a photo that is in demand in the first month or so of your membership, you will have a chance of a sale. Following that, unless you have a very specialised collection that has a definite and healthy niche market, you are going to sink due to the numbers game as your ranking will inevitably plummet and you will be getting fewer views. Total Views: 13,599Total Zooms: 42Average CTR: 0.35 Sales: 5 (reported) I have no problem sharing that info. Some would say that's not bad, some might not. 3 of those sales were via newspapers. I will be doing better next year. I think you did really great! Just started in end 2012... 1000 images online and many zooms. Maybe i started uploading in august 2013 but i have 5000 images with only 1 sale until now and at least 1 unreported. So your numbers are relatively great!
