Simon Evans
Scratching my head and wondering if there were any, not so obvious and not already covered to death, shooting locations nearby I turned to the internet and came across this site http://www.shothotspot.com/ . I wasn't expecting it to throw up anything other than the usual tourist sites, but I was quite surprised by some of the locations. It seems to be worldwide too. spacecadet
It thinks East London is in Africa and churches are illustrated by an icon of a mosque with a dome and minarets. Hmm.
Simon Evans
That's strange, I'm getting results for East London in the right location. It's not just churches that have a mosque icon, castles do too! I'm not sure what the crusaders would think of that!
Matt Ashmore
So it looks like it crawls images on Flickr and looks for geotags and keywords and shows what other people have already photographed. It is useful for a little local inspiration. Thanks for sharing.
Brian Yarvin
My block comes up as a place to shoot architecture and it shows a covered bridge (a distinctive icon of rural America) walking distance from it. Not bad at all.
Inchiquin
East London is in Africa. My uncle used to live there. Alan
spacecadet
I did geography at school as well. An East London is in Africa but I live in another one and it wasn't available as a choice.
John Mitchell
I see that someone recently added her own name -- or someone added it for her -- as a "hotspot." Hmmm...

Marianne
It came up with lots of places here in the NY suburbs. Nothing new but it reminds me that I should process many of the photos I have. I forget how much history there is close to home, even here in the "new world," LOL.
Michael Halberstadt
You might also try: http://www.panoramio.com/- I think that's one source they use- but it's a lot less cluttered and no ads.
