John Walker
My Sony RX100M3 has decided to give up. I press the button to turn it on and the lens goes in and out for a few seconds, then the screen goes off and that's it. Hoping for feedback on the best place to send for repair. Allan Bell
I sent my RX100 mk7 to Fixation for adjustment. Images were blurred down the right side about one third in to the centre. If I remember correctly they had to wait for spare parts from Japan but I had it back within two weeks. All good now but it did cost me just over £400 for spares and labour. I now have the most expensive RX100 mk7 in the country. Would I use them again? YES. Allan Oh! I did send it back to Sony while under warranty and they sent it back and it was a bit better. Became gradually worse as the weeks passed by and as it was then out of warranty. That is why I sent it to Fixation. Would not send Sony cameras to Sony again as Fixation will repair Sony cameras under warranty if you send them details. Bryan
I dropped my Sony RX100 V and it displayed similar symptoms to yours. I had it fixed by horelytech. There is a thread lurking somewhere that I can't find, with helpful suggestions from others. The bad news - it cost £415, which isn't far off what I paid for the camera used. The good news - an unexpected benefit, the image quality was improved. In fact I would say that of the 5 Sony lenses I have tried the 24-70 f1.8 on this camera is by far the best, pity it doesn't have a larger sensor to match. I guess that they swapped the lens assembly.
John Walker
Thanks Allan and Bryan £400 is a lot - I can a new one on Amazon for £469. Need to do some thinking .....
Gervais Montacute
They're about £200 to £300 on Ebay. I wouldn't bother with that either because who knows what condition they're in/or how long they will last anyway.
spacecadet
Assuming you've checked out Youtube and Ifixit for repair tutorials and come up blank, time to say goodbye. I didn't repair either of my Sony As. Got useful money for them on ebay as "spares or repair" as well. Jeffrey Isaac Greenberg
OP, did you take battery out, put it back in? is there "return to default settings" button? can you get to menu whilst briefly on & select same...?

Amazon UK doesn't have any of the M3s in stock -says usually dispatched within 1 to 2 months. They seem to be out of stock everywhere in fact, including Sony UK direct. A lot of the other models are not available either at the moment. The VA seems to be available in a few places for £799.

Old battery struggling to supply enough current in cold weather? Try another battery?
Gervais Montacute
Also might be worth mentioning that it's the first month of the year and a lot of new models will be coming out quite soon as is always the case.

Fortunately cameras don't have the same problems with replacing batteries than phones and tablets have. Second for try a new battery.
John Walker
Thanks again for the suggestions. I've tried all the tricks - swapping battery, with a card, without a card. The camera sometimes reports battery exhausted and shuts down. A quick test with a meter shows the battery to be at full charge voltage. It's almost like there's a short somewhere that drops the voltage inside the camera. The link that Spacecadet kindly added looks interesting. I've nothing to lose by giving it a try. I'll update this thread once I've tried it.

Allan Bell
It sounds as if there is something inside has moved and is being trapped by lens retracting causing a break in the circuitry. Could be difficult to find without further disassembly. Something I would prefer the specialists to do. Allan

John Walker
WARNING! I've stripped down my RX100 as per the instructions on Spacecadet's link. It hasn't solved the problem on my camera but I did get quite a jolt from it. There must be a high voltage generated by the circuit and stored in a capacitor. While removing the back plate one of my fingers made contact with the circuit on the base. Ouch! Nearly dropped the camera. I'll persevere a bit longer but It looks like the fault on my camera is not the same as the one in the link. Not sure it's worth paying out £400+ for the repair with the low returns on Alamy. I do think that £400+ for repairs is far too steep, considering I only paid £250 on Ebay a few years back. £200 and I wouldn't have thought twice. Perhaps time to cut my losses and just be content with any future returns from the 6000+ images I already have on Alamy. spacecadet
Ah that would be the flash capacitor. Always worth a miss but it's so crowded in there they're not always easy to spot. You can discharge it with a resistor but you don't need to now lol. Still trending around what you paid on ebay. You might get lucky and get down to £150-180. Broken ones are making £70 so that cuts it down a bit. Edited January 20 by spacecadet
John Walker
I've now tried all the suggestions with no luck so it looks like it's either fork out £400+ for a repair or buy another on Ebay. Such a shame as the camera is in 'as new' condition. Although I sell on average 12 images a month, the return per image is so low these days. I now have to consider if it's worth the outlay. Thanks again for all your suggestions.
