Have you found any photos in May

I'm curious about stills from movies. Do photographers get permission to borrow the film negatives? Or do they photograph their tvs (which I doubt!)?

Neither, they're usually on-set stills, or occasionally frame enlargements, from the production company or whoever owns the publicity rights- it could be another picture library. The one you've found looks like the latter.  Skellig Edition and ZDF were  co-producers with Herzog's production company.

Photographing off-screen would be a breach of copyright, of course.

What I don't get is that often, like in the case of the photo above, the exact same movie still is on Alamy from a variety of contributors.  These are not public domain, so how do so many get their hands on these photos and, presumably, have the rights to sell them.

Libraries put their collections on other libraries. It happens all the time on Alamy- contributors here find themselves competing with themselves with images they put on other libraries years ago. Non-ex of course.;)

And I assume publicity rights get sub-licensed, if that's the right term. With a 40 or 50-year-old film you can see it happening.

But even newer films have stills scattered over a bunch of outlets and contributors.
