My first year on Alamy.

Recommended Posts

Today, I am completing my first year on Alamy. For me the interesting view from the outside on the result of my work, as briefly will place what has been achieved during this period.

The number of images - 4177

 Sales - 3

As you can see the result of more than modest. I would like to know the opinion of what I could not achieve. Although much myself understand, including the right keywords and titles. With great difficulty trying to reduce the gap with the English language, but it seems that it will never be able to achieve.

I would be grateful for any comment.

Genadii, hello!

I will offer you some advice. Please realize this is just my opinion, and I'm no expert, for sure.

I just took a look at your first page only. You have many pictures of a beautiful model with boxing gloves.

Those are glamour shots. Her hair and makeup is perfect. A few years back buyers started desiring images of people doing their everyday chores, and not looking at the camera.

If you had this woman actually in a boxing match with another woman, no makeup and hair scraped back in a pony tail, it would be a better image. They would need to be in a boxing ring and it should be a full body shot.

But in reality, there's probably not much of a market for female boxers unless female boxing is a huge popular sport in your country.

You need to spend more time looking at other contributor's images. Unless your model is famous, you don't want to zoom in portrait mode. Just a pretty woman isn't enough.

Buyers might do a search for "two women laughing" in the search, you might see two women looking at pictures on a cell phone and laughing at the picture, or one opening a gift while the other looks on, both are smiling or laughing, but neither looking at the camera.

So what I'm saying is don't make your people look posed, but instead just living their life.

I wander about a park here in the city. I've taken shots of a man sitting on a brick wall talking on his phone, a picture of a Hispanic father with his small daughter sitting on a park bench while watching geese. I took pictures of a sturdy woman, no beauty, hot and with no makeup wielding a gas lawn trimmer working on the park grounds.

I went to a splash park and photographed children and parents enjoying the spray on a hot day.

I took shots of my city's skyline as the setting sun made a star shape at the edge of a building. I've taken images of men building a house, and a man in a lift bucket working on an electric line.

You just need to get away from posed shots and do real life. You are a very good photographer. You can do this. Get some pictures of popular shops in your city. Explore where you live. I just sold two pictures for a travel guide for my city. One was of a line of city rental bikes, the other was of a pole sign advertising a water park. Nothing special, but somebody bought them.

Please don't take this as criticism, but guidance. I'd like to see you succeed.

Betty

Hi Gennadii,

Happy first year anniversary! Firstly I just want to congratulate on how much improved your English is from when you first joined. You should be so proud, and I am full of admiration for your determination in learning a new language!

Your pictures are of a very high standard, and you have some really great shots in there! There are just a couple of bits I would mention though...

Looking through the first few pages you seem to have a lot of similar images. For example the girl with the globe - There are 111 images which all basically illustrate the same thing. You could easily edit this down to 4 or 5 - as having so many will harm your CTR.

I hope you don't mind me saying, but I also feel that you might do better with a more realistic and natural wardrobe/styling/poses for your models. The stockings and miniskirts etc combined with the poses almost seem like glamour shots.

A teacher wouldn't wear a miniskirt and stockings in this way, so people looking for images of teachers are unlikely to pick these ones. I hope you understand what I mean and don't take offence, its just my personal opinion  :) Might be worth having a look at what is already on Alamy for some styling inspiration?

The lady in green with the book (HGJDPK - I really like this one!) is more natural in terms of wardrobe, make up and pose. And therefore much more appealing (I would imagine) to buyers  :)

Hope this helps  :)

Lizzy

I'm a newbie as well - I only started in January 2016 but I've 6 sales from only 755 images. I've had a look at your port and you have far too many similars.  Look at your teacher/student pictures as an example, you have pages and pages of them. I realise they're very pretty models, with not many clothes on, but so many similar pictures are affecting your ranking. Additionally, ask yourself who would buy those pictures? Certainly not any schools, they couldn't illustrate an article about teaching, all because of the way the models are dressed. I try to have a maximum of two 'similars', and I like to think my similars are different, if that makes sense?! I hope my inane ramblings have helped in some way - lose some of those similar images!

I was so interested in your image HHKENX because I didn't know what it was that the man is riding on. Then I saw that you probably didn't know either since you have no caption or keywords. I believe it would be called an electric unicycle and you might want to research it a little. It is an image that might sell. There are very few of them on Alamy and yours is an example of a real person using it for travel. I agree that your shots with models are not likely to sell on Alamy. You will do better with candid shots of real people.

I thank everyone who has given their precious time on my work !!!

Really valuable comments on the similarity of images, on the one hand it is necessary to remove and clean all, but on the other hand - never understand that and what image will choose the buyer, on the example of a girl with the globe, each of them a pointer of the country on the globe is always a different place from what country the buyer need not know, and therefore placed a lot similar. Maybe it would be necessary to place with some sort of interval, but not at the same time a whole series, although the idea that the buyer will be easier to find an indication of the country he desired .....?

 Something to think about!

Thank you for thinking out loud about the preference of shooting direction, it is winter also because rented only in the studio, state of health does not allow a lot of time in the cold, because the monotony and images, rather a little heat in my region ...

Thank you for your responsiveness !!!

  • Glamour doesn't sell at Alamy. Seems like a complete waste of time and energy shooting pretty women doing nothing or placed in completely out of context situations.
  • You might have 4000 images, but in fact, you have more like 400 subjects and that's what really counts, NOT the number of images.
  • A lot of your zoo / park animals are shot from way too high.
  • Having your animal in the frame is one thing, but don't ignore the surroundings nor the harsh shadows.

The kind of photography I should concentrate on:

I added examples to show you. Fact is you should put more thought in your animal shots. Some are very good, but many are hastily taken snapshots taking down your quality.

I understand your point. Thank you for expressing an opinion !!!

You're welcome ;)

But as tarsierspectral mentioned, all of the advice above has already been said in the March topic where you asked a similar question. Instead of following our advice, you even increased the glamour shots. That you only got 3 sales within a year, probably proves our advice was correct. So, I don't understand why don't you follow it?

Cheers,

Philippe

I wrote above that the health and weather do not allow me to. Much to my regret ...

Then why not including the name of the country in the description and keyword? They are all the same

Oh Dear Gennadii, first of all I must say that I am impressed at the number of images you have amassed in your first year. I completed my first year back in December 2016 and have less than 1/4 of that.

I am not a specialist in Alamy sales, I myself wish I had more. However, I wish to comment on the key wording of one of your images,  as an example: there is an older woman, the teacher, and a younger one, the student, but there is no mention to the presence of women in the keywords, or the ages and ethnicity of those women. The teacher is wearing a very audacious outfit and quite unusual for her profession and position, but there is no mention to it in the keywords. Think as a customer who is trying to find this very picture. How would you go about this?

This is more or less how I would go about it:

Female teacher caucasian ethnicity sexy/unusual/ audacious outfit angry female student embarrassed.

One thing that helps me when I am key wording (not that I am a specialist on it, I am still learning) is to describe the scene first:

Angry female caucasian teacher 25-30 years old wearing audacious outfit, looking at female caucasian student 15-20 years old in front of a blackboard, student looks embarrassed. And then I include most of those words in my keywords and elaborate from that. I hope you understand that this is not an usual classroom picture and you need to make sure the customer can find it using words that are unusual for a scholarly setting.

Hope that helps. Your pictures are good quality but you need to find a way for those who are looking for them to find them.

and that to be an example. There are two women in this shot,

Oh, Alessandra! I am touched by your concern and responsiveness!
Thank you for such a detailed practical help! Now will apply edit the description of these pictures !!!
I think with such detail that I would surely buy (even sure)

I don't know, I try not to obsessed with Alamy measures, but I often do go to the search results to see how customers are finding my images and if the images they have found are relevant to their search. When the latter is not true, I change the key wording a little so a customer will not fall in the same trap. For instance if a customer is looking for a beautiful young woman with red hair and arrives at one of my images that portrays a beautiful young woman with brown hair and a red purse and shoes I try to change the key wording a little with composed words. However, it has become more difficult to avoid spurious finds with the new search engine since composed words such as "red hair" are being read as "red" only and "hair" only in some searches.

I understand that whenever a customer looks for something unrelated and finds your images and does not click at it it affects your CRT negatively.
