  1. John Morrison just remarked about an image of the Iwo Jima Monument, that it's one of the very few sculptures that began life as a photograph... To which I replied that this subject would deserve it's own topic. It was about this image of mine: The Marine Corps War Memorial aka The Iwo Jima Statue has around 3000 images on Alamy. After the iconic image by Joe Rosenthal of the second raising of the flag on Iwo Jima. The memorial is by Felix de Weldon It's pretty big. Weldon (1907-2003) was very prolific: many kings, presidents and Elvis. To my mind came the recent Black Lives Matter image from Bristol: Jen Reid takes a photo of her black resin and steel statue titled A Surge of Power (Jen Reid) 2020, created after a photo of Jen Reid on the plinth by Marc Quinn. That's the sculptor not the photographer of this image, because that's Ben Birchall for PA here on Alamy. He has a whole bunch of images where she's posing like her statue, but I happen to like this a lot more, where she's taking a photo of her own statue with her phone. Ben, if you're reading this: we're having this challenge each month here and this month it's about photographers... November 2020 Challenge here. It closes November 30 at midnight GMT. 😁😁 Btw I have not seen one original photo of Jen Reid on that plinth just after Colston was toppled. Is there one? Was it published anywhere? Or was the whole thing a conspiracy clever stunt by a white artist after all? If it was it was brilliant. (To be clear: I am very much against tearing statues down. Remember the Ministry of Truth.) And this sculpture by Seward Johnson (of Awakening fame) that had been vandalized (with #Me Too graffiti) in Sarasota - image by James Pintar and this one by Peter Titmuss, both here on Alamy - Called Unconditional Surrender or Embracing Peace statue in Sarasota (with copies in other places). There are around 300 images on Alamy of the various copies. It's either after the famous photo by Alfred Eisenstaedt or Victor Jorgensen (in the Library of Congres because he was an Army photographer) of the victory parade after WW2 in New York. Some other come to mind like the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial which is stated to have been inspired by/created after photographs. I like especially the Bread Line by Segal. - by Mira - and by Rubens Alarcon Which turns out, very much looks like a photo turned into sculpture, but it isn't. Inspired maybe, but these are actual real people all very good friends of the sculptor among which the photographer Donald Lokuta. Talking about a good image to include in this month's challenge: both of them here in a NJ diner. This one definitely has a photo as the starting point: The Greensboro Four or February One by James Barnhill. Very few images here on Alamy. Most are by Walter Bibikow through various agencies. Press image by whom? This one by Philip Scalia. This is the historic Woolworth where the sit-ins happened, now a museum: Woolworth by Ian Dagnall ...and Memphis by Ian Dagnall. (I may have one too, but not on Alamy.) There are copies of the counter and the seats in the Smithsonian and in the Memphis Lorraine Motel that is now The National Civil Rights Museum. And then there are the Fab Four that Edo and a lot of other people have put up here: by Ed Rooney The sculpture is by Andrew or Andy Edwards. But is there a photo? He did Cilla Black also in an iconic pose, like on many photos, but is there 1 specific photo? There are quite a lot of statues in Liverpool from the category artists or sports that look a bit familiar. So do you know of any other? Or the original or inspirational photos to one of these? Or do you have some yourself? An image I mean. Now I think of it I may have a Babe Ruth... wim
  2. True. Jen Reid; The Kiss (Unconditional Surrender) come to mind. Worth it's own topic. wim edit: here is that topic about sculptures after or inspired by photographs.
  3. Or simply just used keywords none of us have thought of. wim
  4. Haha only as a snowball. I have tiny one of the White House, it's even on Alamy. The WH is not in the image either. This image in a slightly different edit is in one of the Lonely Planets as an opening page. And there's a jigsaw. For this edit it's the first sale license. I did this shot twice each from a different viewpoint, both in winter 2007 I think. Rented lens specifically for the occasions. wim edit: forgot to say thank you!
  5. DC landmarks - Marketing package - Large business $$$ wim edit: 1000px yay! Well 993, but close. 1st: dragged straight from it's Zoom page. 2nd:dragged from the Zoom page; then click on the image; then shift click on the image View image page. The latter one comes with the (browser) zoom function of the blog, which enables View image. But no link to it's zoom page. The first doesn't come with any link or enlarging, but it does allow View image, which gives you the first part of the caption in the browser's address bar (=good for Google). Hmm. Where's the scratching head emoji?
  6. A really good solution to that would mean another tab and maybe renaming the new tab: recently added vs recently shot. Not something we could do. I agree it's best to leave the date taken field alone. Unless it's a studio shot. wim
  7. http://www.pressreader.com/ https://www.scribd.com/ https://www.zinio.com/ https://ink-global.com/our-clients/portfolio/ Most are paid services, with free test runs. wim
  8. You do have to wait till the database refreshes. That's usually once every 24 hours, sometimes a little bit more, even more over the weekend, and even more when there's a disruption somewhere, like earlier this week. When you hit save, there is a note that comes up, warning about the delay btw. wim
  9. Germany Book Inside $$ 860px seems to be it now. The whole image is 1300px. That's too wide a warning says and it does let you put in 1000px, but reverts to 860px. wim edit: no idea how Michael's pizzagate image is wider than 860px. Maybe it's a conspiracy after all.
  10. It's your post until the hammer drops. That'll be on November 30 at midnight GMT. So a good 10 days to get some more images of photographers up here. If you have to shoot some or delve into your archive, better do it now, because you have to upload them as well. Have a look at the already impressive amount and quality of the images in this challenge. And if you win you get to set the new challenge. And eternal fame of course. wim
  11. At $19,999.99 a day. Boy did we choose the wrong profession. I'm not sure what populates that region column. I'm guessing it's where the payment comes from. wim
  12. Thank you that was quick! There's still space in the header to display stuff like those stats. It would also be a logical place to put it. wim
  13. Ah yes regions, hadn't thought of that. UK 61 US 56 while in my original list it was: United Kingdom 8 United States 1 Illinois 1 New Jersey 1 New York 1 North America 3 Pennsylvania 1 World English Language 5 Worldwide 138 + all the others like Japan 8 Yes Pennsylvania and Illinois etc as a country is perhaps ominous. The United Balkan States? BTW Brian, I have had the District as a country! Maybe we should tweet that to Eleanor Holmes Norton. Or to the Donald. DC becoming a state was one of his big scary things in this election. A repeat seller! If you do a search for taxation (39,395 !) it comes up 6 or 7th. Keith Morris is #1; ICP is 4 or 5th (with a brilliant wallet). wim
  14. Thank you Alamy for the widening of this space! This one is now 999px wide and it came with the Keep the ratio box ticked when dragged from the Zoom page. Department of the Interior DC. Worldwide marketing $$$. wim
  15. Definitely weirder than I thought: Australia, New Zealand and Oceania 2 Brazil 2 China 1 France 4 German speaking countries 1 Germany 21 Illinois 1 Italy 2 Japan 8 Latvia 1 Netherlands 2 New Jersey 1 New York 1 North America 3 Pakistan 1 Pennsylvania 1 Poland 1 Russian Federation 3 Singapore 1 Slovenia 2 South Korea 2 Spain 1 Sweden 3 Taiwan 1 Turkey 4 United Kingdom 8 United States 1 World English Language 5 Worldwide 138 Yes it's not a whole lot and for a lot less money than the last 7 years. I blame Boris. wim
  16. Sorry for the OT guys, we have no PM here. No it was not short term rental. No rent involved. It was simply the flat of friends of my wife's cousin. My wife and I stayed with them in their flat right behind Fettes. They have a house on the coast as well. I think those people in your building have a house somewhere else also. The one behind Fettes used to be for their children when they were students. So it's not huge. Not big enough for our modest family reunion (Holland; Poland; Scotland; London and Cambridge) anyway. They did explain that half of Edinburgh is living rent-free 10 months of the year from renting out their flats the other 2 months. wim
  17. Do you keyword using US English? It's quite different from the Queen's. And what about the subjects? Are they comparable? wim
  18. And if you take a black one it doubles as a hood when you take pictures through windows. Or to look at your screen in bright sunlight. I think mine was 1,59 from ebay and it lives in my bag cushioning my Sony. Search for fleece neck warmer. wim
  19. I thought that looked familiar. It's not the view from your house is it? Because some years ago part of our family stayed a couple of days in the flat one or two floors down and we visited. No pix from the flat I'm afraid. It was the summer when they had the Fingal in dazzle paint, more or less up the street from there (one pic in light rain 😁). wim
  20. So third time around: Haha! Yes that's my fault. Sorry for the confusion! I wanted to get the same message in both the October and November challenges. But after posting the first message in the October Challenge and Allan's reply, I decided to have lunch first. All has been corrected now. Albeit after a couple of mishaps here, when I deleted the message by mistake first and then couldn't get the quote back. Still not sure why that was. Another 20 minutes lost to the machines. (some music to go with that - from the Valentyne Suite, which is much better) wim
  21. Now we have this new Forum format, which is much narrower on most devices and displays, it's a good moment to point out the solution to images getting squished here. You can only remedy this on your own images in your own post. So if your images appear squished and you want to rectify that: Go back to your original post. Click Edit. Double click on each image and tick the box Keep original aspect ratio. Click save. Done. And as Allan said: And don't forget if it does not work check the max limit in pixels on the sides. (length or height) and reduce appropriately. Not sure if the size limits have shrunk with the new design. The resulting images certainly are a lot smaller. wim
  22. Wow once I'm inside the edit box I'm unable to get a quote in here? It keeps on appearing in a new reply box? Weird. Anyway I'll start over. wim
  23. A bit more like Belgian, Flemish. Aren't there a lot of things or people called Fleming over there? wim
