New 70-350 lens for Sony a6000

Recommended Posts

Sony has come out with a weather-sealed 70-350 lens for the a6000 and its siblings.

The lens has image stabilization and looks to be fairly compact. It could be a good choice for wildlife photography even though it is a bit on the slow side.  It's selling for $1000 (USD or CAN), which I suppose isn't too bad these days.

Review video here.

Hmm!  105mm - 475mm equiv. It is slow. £830 inluding VAT (tax) in the UK. Cheap at $1000.  It should be  $1,410 going on UK price.

Oh I forgot you tend not to add taxes when you quote prices. Without VAT here it would be about £692 would be about 1,176 Canadian. Still cheap as chips at $1000.

Not that I want one though as I am waiting for my Sony 200mm - 600mm full frame to arrive. Giving 300 - 900mm on an A6000.😃

Sterling is at $1.30 so £830 is only $1080 and there's likely to be sales tax on that $1000- US prices usually quote without tax.

12% tax here in BC -- 7% PST (provincial sales tax) plus 5% GST (federal goods and services tax)

Thanks for the information John, but that's not for me, way too specialised.  Plus I have a very nice 100-300 f4 Canon fit Sigma that works with my a6500 and is sharp from corner to corner.

Still waiting for a half decent replacement for the Sony Zeiss 17-70 f4, that's a lens I would happily part with cash for.

I don't happen to have an extra $1K lying around, so I won't be buying this lens at the moment. However, I like its looks and compact size. I'm trying  to add some more wildlife images to my collection -- birds and other friendly critters, no chasing grizzlies for me -- even though I know that the competition for this type of imagery is outrageous. The 55-210 has been serving me quite well, but it would be nice to have a bit more reach. I find that the OSS on the 55-210 works a lot better with the a6000 than it did with the NEX-6. Improved firmware perhaps. Who knows. You must really appreciate the 6500's in-camera stabilization with that long Sigma.

Ah, another piece of equipment I don't want or need. The list continues to grow.

You're lucky. GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) is a tough one to kick.

You look like you're ready for the wintry blasts in your latest profile pic.

The in camera stabilisation IBIS is very useful but I occasionally forget to reset the focal length when using my manual focus lenses. Using a 12mm wide angle with the focal length set to say 75mm does nothing for sharpness!

My100-300 Sigma does transmit the focal length to the camera via a clever adaptor and I have used it handheld a couple of times, but it's mainly used on a tripod. To be honest it's far too big and heavy to cart around, so sees very little use. I once struggled to carry it and a tripod on my bicycle in search of red kite, but failed to get any decent shots - something not to be repeated! I have an old but compact 75-150 f4 Pentax lens that is both wonderfully sharp and was cheap to buy, that I do carry.

Just realised I am now "Part of the forum furniture" and wondering when that happened. Ed, John and Mark are also "POTFF" too. Whereas Bryan is a "Forum Regular".

Ed, John, Mark and myself have in excess of 5000 posts but Bryan has below 5000 posts, but only just. Indicating that 5000 posts may be the quantum leap.

I am trying hard to get my number of images up to match my posts but it seems to elude me.😞

Sorry not stealing the thread. Just an observation in passing.

I do not have a clue. Do you mean what I give out or receive. Also how would I find it?
