I had trouble with the ISSN/ISBNs as well - I had to add a new one as I changed bands for magazines so I replaced my older ones and it kept saying the ISSNs were incorrect.

I finally managed to get three in there, but then it started complaining about my book ISBNs.

They have all three been in there since I started DACS a few years ago, one with the ISBN straight out of the book and the other two as "Alamy Sale". The only way I could get them in in the end was to take out the dashes and leave the 13 character number.

It took a while, but I got there!

Someone may know this:

I currently let Alamy sort out my DACS payments. Usually magazines.

If I sell a couple of images through another agency that specialises in book covers. How do I claim for these?

Do I just claim direct?

I don't think you can. The Payback contract requires you to appoint DACS as sole agent.

2019 will be the first year that I take DACS 'seriously' given that the amount should be worth claiming. I wasn't even aware of it until I joined Alamy, and the amounts I was getting from Alamy up until 2017 didn't spur me to act. 2018's amount being more significant has changed that. I've been contributing directly to magazines and books as a hobbyist for around twenty years so it'll be worth my time going through my shelves and tears to list them out as a direct claim, but leave Alamy to deal with the information they have locked in their vaults.

FAQs

What happens if I apply for royalties directly as well as through a picture library?

Claiming Payback royalties through multiple sources can have a detrimental effect on all Payback members as it can lead to cases where an individual receives a proportionally greater share of Payback royalties than they would making a single claim of their own or through an agent.

If at the close of the Payback submission period you have more than one Payback claim submitted and they exceed the maximum level which one publication claim would reach, then DACS will proportionately reduce these claims.

Close of campaign After proportional reduction

J Smith, Direct Claim               120     108

J Smith, Picture Library Claim144    132

Total Points                               264    240

EXAMPLE Maximum publication points: 240

Ignoring the subtext, it would appear to be OK to have claims from an agency and yourself. The exclusivity on the t&c link would apply just to an individual image would it not, rather than your whole content?

.....and couldn't get ISSN numbers recognised

I've managed to enter and save my very first entry, but subsequent attempts to add further titles are just buffering. I don't know whether it's my end or theirs.

Exactly my experience too. I've emailed DACS.

I've just made my DACS submission. I noticed on the publication history webform that DACS didn't "find" the Titles for about 1/3rd of the ISBN and ISSNs I entered and so I had to fill the title in manually. It was the same last last year. I'm pretty sure I've got the right/valid ISSN/ISBNs but it seems they aren't in the DACS database. Is anyone else seeing this behaviour?

It's been working this morning and I've finished my submission. Very surprised at the total number of images at 489. Having torn out the pages from the magazines over the last twenty years or so it was the work involved in tracing the correct ISSN numbers which had put me off doing it before, but I had no idea of the quantity. It's taken a lot of time and effort but glad to have it done and submitted.

Ooh, just realised I have a few old tear sheets. I don't think they'd get me into a higher category though. They're a couple of orders of magnitude fewer than yours.

Oh Gawd, please tell me that I'm not the only (slow, lazy) idiot on Earth! Just went to DACS to submit my publication history, knowing that the cut-off date was today, and see that "Publication History submissions have now closed." Nooooooo!  I've been working on Internet Time for at least fifteen years and presumed that i had until midnight to submit my claim.  It appears not

C'est la Vie, (say the old folks). Bugger, say I.
