Hello,

I was looking at buying a 170-500mm sigma lens that is for canon. I looked at some of the converters and wondered if you could

still autofocus and if any quality is lost.

Thanks,

Jacob Y.

Jacob make your life easier
If you use Nikon stick to Nikon or compatible lenses.

My experience with adapted solutions is that you will spend money on something and the results wont be what you expected.

in the past, I´ve heard that the focus system on Nikons is on the lenses and on Canons is in the body, therefore, Canon lenses are cheaper, but Nikon bodies are cheaper.

Not sure if that´s true, but I am sure that Canon and Nikon lenses are not compatible.

Sigma also offers to convert their lenses from Canon to Nikon, don't know for the lens you said, but maybe drop them a mail.

I believe a converter may not be the best solution.

My understanding is that Canon lenses are designed to have a smaller distance from the rear element to the sensor.

This means adding an adaptor to Nikon lens on a Canon body, moves it further away from the sensor allowing it to work.

Adding an adaptor to a Canon lens on a Nikon body still moves it further away from the sensor, but it needs to be closer, so it would act like extension tubes and you would loose infinity focus.

Ok, understood (but do not agree as I've seen his photo gallery and it's clear that he's an Excellent photographer with great technical & artistic ability and that can't be said for all those that write reviews)  :D

.....so here's another review, this time by Gordon Laing  of Camera Labs http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Nikon_Nikkor_AF-S_200-500mm_f5-6E_ED_VR/index.shtml

I can't help you with regards to the lens you're asking about as I've had no experience with that particular brand. However, I have a Canon 5D iii and I cannot understand why anyone would go to the expense of a good body then put cheap version lenses on. It's akin to buying a Porsche and putting bicycle wheels on it!! My Canon lenses may be expensive but they do exactly what it says on the tin! Good luck in your quest,

Regards, Davey

A law against using Nikon? I vote for it ;) .... sorry not starting a flame war here, both systems are good in their own way!

+1: cannot agree more! Rather a cheap body and a quality lens than vice versa.

I am now almost exclusively on Sigma fixed foal lenses, despite the Canon 11-24, for which there is no considerable alternative.

Looking into getting a Sigma 120-300 f2.8 next ... but i need sales ;)
