Sheila Smart Posted May 24, 2014 Share Posted May 24, 2014 I have always said I would never do another exhibition and even asked my husband to talk me out of it for just thinking about it but I have been debating exhibiting my work in virtual form – rather than spend a whole heap of money on prints and canvas and hanging in an exhibition, I will just burn my work to DVD (or whatever) and having a large monitor placed in an exhibition with the DVD on repeat. I am thinking of doing it in the same format as my latest Youtube offering where the black and white image gradually changes to colour.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nauqlh0WsA0&feature=youtu.be which will, hopefully, keep the public interested for more than two seconds! I am sure that exhibiting in this format must have been done before and would appreciate it if anyone knows if this is feasible and if galleries accept this form of exhibiting one's work. wiskerke Posted May 24, 2014 Share Posted May 24, 2014 Sheila, Would you yourself buy a print from a screen that way? A $10 print probably. A $25 print maybe. I would at least show a fair amount of prints, say a room full or two walls in an exhibition. One of the most important factors when people buy art is that the buyer personally knows the artist in some way. Maybe have a small screen with you working; talking; explaining next to it. I went to see one show about a year ago but was a bit disappointed with the quality of images. Somehow I had expected to see beautiful big prints instead of, what I felt were, overly bright digital displays. In the end, I decided I preferred the photographer's online version. I certainly don't expect to sell any prints as in my own past experiences, folk do not buy prints from exhibitions, possibly due to the subject matter of my work. I have sold prints from an exhibition I had in a local restaurant but that was mainly local landscapes and the buyers were friends who went to the restaurant! A few years back, I had an exhibition at the Brick Lane Gallery in London which was a complete waste of time and money. The complete lack of communication by them after I had paid for the space indicated exactly where their interest in art lay. Anyone who exhibits regularly can tell you that it is an enormous amount of work involved, not just the expense of printing and framing, or placing them on canvas, delivering them to the venue but also arranging the backdrops to hold the prints plus gallery fees for the space involved. The thought of it makes my head spin! Hence the reason for the "virtual" exhibition. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Rather than the expense and time of producing your/our own "virtual gallery" would it not be better to find more/new ways to direct potential customers to here and elsewhere? Jane Hobson Posted May 25, 2014 Share Posted May 25, 2014 The focus of other posters here seems to be on 'selling off the wall', which, in my opinion (along with yours!), is unlikely. If this is not your aim, then this may be a good option for you. If your aim is raising awareness of your work, engaging people with it, (and then sowing the seed of desire to commission you) then projection within a gallery space may be just the right medium for you. Having looked at the video, I'd suggest either showing colour or BW - the morphing from one to the other makes it look like indecision rather than offering choice. All the best of luck! I decided to check out the New York Soho gallery (thanks fotoDogue) and long story short, they are displaying my work at their gallery from 9th to 15th June. I am also looking at local (ie Australian) galleries but I have yet to receive a response to my emails. The Soho gallery seems to be the only one I can find who specialises in "virtual" displays. I cannot locate any in the UK by Googling. So if anyone is in the vicinity of the gallery in SoHo, drop in and let me know how it looks. Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend the opening! After reading dozens of references to it we decided to read it. Very off-topic, I know. I noticed that the hours are Tu - Sat 1pm-5. I don't know why these places don't put their cross streets on their home page but Google told me it is just below Houston on Sullivan. I will try to get by.
