hdh
I recently came across the website of a German Nature Preserve Organisation (NABU). It appears they have a clever system to classify birds, that live in Germany. Unfortunately it is only in German and also available as mobile application. So for the German speakers this may be a helpful utility for classification. (maybe it works with on the fly translation in chrome?) you just click the data you know, size, colors, form of beak and legs and their color and it comes back with a small list of matching birds. here it is: https://www.nabu.de/natur-und-landschaft/natur-erleben/spiele-apps-klingeltoene/vogelfuehrer/index.html maybe something similar exists somewhere else? Maybe in English?
spacecadet
The RSPB site is quite good for this. I don't know about mobile, though, I don't use it.

spacecadet
OT, we don't do a lot of birdwatching in Germany, the wine is a greater attraction, but it's interesting to see how similar the words are.

Phil Robinson
I've always thought that Zilpzalp was a better name for a Chiffcahff.
