Ouch! Jeff, I feel your pain. The market changes every few months, so you have to do your research just when you need a new laptop. So without doing any recent research, and in almost complete ignorance 😝, I suggest you might want to look into the Dell XPS series. I have a Dell XPS 15 which is getting to be quite old now, but was billed as a Macbook killer when it was released. Had similar or better specs and was half the price of the equivalent by Apple. Depends how much you want to spend and what size screen. This looks tasty though:

you'll have to find the $ equivalent, it detected I'm in the UK...

As long as you get one with at least 12GB RAM, you will be good to go.  I have an HP, and it's great. 500GB SSD. 14" .

There are lots of good laptops to choose from. I don't use it as my main computer, I have a desktop I built myself for that, but haven't had any issues with the HP.

Mr. Greenberg, even though I was not going to communicate with you, I would be happy to help if I could.

I used several Dell, Lenovo, Sony, Toshiba laptops, and nothing was more reliable and durable than Dell XPS (do not confuse with Inspiron or Vostro). Last year got 13" and 15" for daughters, they both Photoshop although obviously not as fast as a desktop of similar config (I believe you know that). As such, I would recommend XPS 13" for best mobility or XPS 15" for better productivity (giving that they install a better graphics into 15" which is not suitable for 13" due to size and heat). For 15" right now Dell offers $750 discount (the machine would cost about the same as the 13" below but has RTX 3050 with 4G VRAM [mobile version] installed). Also note that the 13" XPS will have only USB-C but you obviously can use dongles as needed.

Other specs for a ~$1400 laptop may be like this (I would never go back to using a laptop for graphics though, even with an external monitor...):

I brought a 14" Lenovo x1 carbon gen 10 w i5 1240p CPU with a 100% sRGB IPS touchscreen in dec 2022. My thoughts on it... It's alright. I brought it to supplement an very old Dell XPS which I liked better and probably would have brought a new one were it not the fact the new XPS 13 only have two USB c ports.

The Intel P chips drain the battery pretty fast on the X1, but not as fast as the top of line H chips which I would not recommend. In hindsight I should have gone with a U chip for battery efficiency in exchange for slower performance... So when the battery drains and you plug in the adapter, the laptop gets really hot, and the x1 has a small fan to try and dissipate the heat. Performance of the carbon X1 w i5 1240p chip is very good. I'm processing the newer canon .cr3 raw files which requires higher processing power, and the X1 is fast enough for my purposes. Always nice to have an updated new touchscreen to work on, colors are accurate out of the box... doesn't compare to a xps touchscreen....  with new laptop, able to maybe 2-3 hours of heavy photo editing and raw processing without plugging the laptop in...

I opted to replace the SSD chip with a bigger, faster drive on my own. The bottom cover is a bit trickier to pop open than on an XPS. windows 11 is installed on the new laptop and it just makes the computing experience so much worse versus previous versions.

There is plenty of dongles available on the market for $15-40.

New versions vary from 100% sRGB to 100% Adobe RGB. Calibration with Spyder did not improve it much, suggesting that it was good enough from the box. The only thing I had to disable immediately (in BIOS) was adaptive brightness, it corrupted colors dramatically.

I'd be sure any new laptop has WiFi 6 in addition to getting an USB-C to Ethernet gigabit adapter dongle mentioned.

the brutal slowdown in me workflow,
& this may be a scheme no one else follows,
(but I don't want to change)
is in Adobe Bridge when I edit & keyword with
"filmstrip" on left, large view of selected image on right
when I hit spacebar selected image fills screen** so
I can inspect shake / poor focus etc & left click on
full screen image blows up** an area even more...

**these actions can take 20+ seconds each
😩__ 😩 😩__ 😩
to come into sharp focus -- are these delays unable
to be sped up regardless of laptop power??

40 seconds to check for sharpness?  That's crazy.  I don't have Bridge anymore so I can't test, but it sounds like something is seriously wrong there.

A couple of questions...

1) Presumably that's working on RAW files? JPGs should be virtually instant.

2) What is the pixel size of your images?

On my 2020 (pre M series) MacBook Air it takes 4 seconds to create 100% preview in Bridge of a Lumix RAW file that is 5184 x 3888 pixels using default processing in Bridge. But... if there's an xmp file with my standard preset image adjustments it takes about 16 seconds, which indicates the processing time is also strongly dependant on what image processing is being applied.

My workflow circumvents this by batch producing jpgs from each RAW using a LR preset (while I'm doing something else). I can then quickly review the jpgs (with no delays and after basic processing has already been applied) and cull the JPGs (which also deletes linked xmp and RAW).

Alternatively - check out FastRawViewer and do your focus check/culling with that.

whoops forgot to mention:
looking at (4560 x 1440) DNGs
Ta!
PS. just noticed that left click
zoom was set to 200%, so
adjusting to 100% seems to
cut in-sharp-focus wait time
to ~10+ sec., still a bottleneck...

Errrmmm.... you won't get delays like this with a top spec machine today (or even a bit of a lower spec).

Do you want Windows 10 or 11?

If you are happy with 10 there are some excellent discounts available over large range of laptops. Look at Amazon and set filter to the various Windows 10 options.

We have several laptops in our household and just added a new Lenovo yesterday at a very reduced price, shipped from US to Australia with free shipping.

We actually prefer Windows 10 and it keeps everything easy.
