Dealing with "Bridge" the memory hog

Recommended Posts

I use Bridge to go through my images and every time there is an update it becomes a bigger and bigger memory hog.  I am going through a folder that has 150 images in it and it is using almost 6gb of RAM.  I have 16gb on the computer.  When I try to load a bunch of images into PS, it crashes.  If I open PS without loading from Bridge, it takes up 4-5gb without even doing anything.  Add in what the other apps take, such as Chrome, and it slows to a crawl.  Trying to stream a baseball game and anytime I do something in Bridge, it stalls the streaming.

I have ordered some more RAM, another 16gb, and figure that should last for awhile.

Anyone have any clues on how to keep Bridge from hogging the memory?

I don't why you are using so much RAM as coincidentally I am currently viewing and key wording 125 images in Bridge which is using 185Mb only.

I am on an iMac with 16GB and SSD and opening 12 images from Bridge to Photoshop is pretty instantaneous.

Maybe the problems you are having is not RAM related. Perhaps the techie guys will have more insight

Hope this helps

The 16GB will take care of most if not all problems. I have 32 and it flies.

In Edit>Preferences:

Under General, I have no boxes ticked.

Under Advanced, I have no boxes ticked.

Under Cache, I have every box ticked and Cache is at 256GB.

Under Media Cache, I have the first box ticked: do not delete. It does mean you have to keep an eye out on disk space. And know what to delete if it runs out.

Under Startup Scripts, I have everything ticked including some downloaded ones. This is the first page to un-tick if you never use any of these.

edit: Oh and my C drive is an SSD. Hence the Cache at 256GB.

edit 2: With 820 images in the current folder it uses 3.3GB at this moment. All Sony 42 megapixel images in RAW and full size JPG.

My C drive is 900GB SSD so I made all the changes to what you have.  Bridge is down to using 787MB with the same folder open I had before.  Selected about 20 images and they all loaded into ACR and then into PS without a hitch.

Thanks Wim.  Still glad I ordered the new RAM.  I often have PS, AI and InDesign open at the same time so my machine should be super speedy from now on.

Whoopsy Daisy.

I applied this to Photoshop CC 2021 by mistake.

Now I need to recheck  boxes properly but unsure which.

If possible, can others report which boxes they check -- it

may help keep a Cockney's career from collapsing...?  TIA

I have the following checked in General in PS

Auto show the Home Screen

Export Clipboard

Resize Image During Place

always Create Smart Objects when Placing

Nothing dangerous in there.  Just tick the ones that you want to apply to what you do.

Haha!

The only ones I have ticked are:

Beep When Done (important in my case)

Export Clipboard (useful)

Resize Image During Placing (debatable)

The rest:

Color Picker: Adobe

HUD Color Picker: Hue Strip (Small) (this depends on your display and personal preference)

Image Interpolation: Bicubic Automatic
