Stu
Morning all. I have a shot of a wading bird and I am not sure of the correct species. I have it as a black tailed godwit but might it be a bar tailed godwit? Appreciate any help. Stu.
Joseph Clemson
I can't help you directly but I know the people who can will be along shortly and they will be assisted by knowing the location and time of year.
Stu
Hi Joseph. Thanks for your reply. Taken at the end of February at Thornham salt marshes on the the North Norfolk coast.
Bhandol
Not 100% sure, but looks like a Black Tailed Godwit (Limosa limosa) with slight signs of breeding plumage developing.
Stu
Thank you. You can't see so well in this shot but the throat feathers are turning an orangey brown.
Broad Norfolk
Stu, looks like a Black Tailed Godwit as far as I can tell. I was pointed out black tailed and bar tailed at Cley last year but they were in summer plumage so not 100% sure with this one. Jim.
Stu
Thanks Jim. I think I'll stick with Black Tailed then. Colourwise probably the dingiest shot ever!
Russell
My money's on a Black tailed too.
Davey Towers
Sorry to disagree but I think it's a Bar-Tailed Godwit (Limosa lapponica). The plumage (winter adult) is darker than the Black-tailed variety.
Davey Towers
Sorry to disagree but I think it's a Bar-Tailed Godwit (Limosa lapponica). The plumage (winter adult) is darker than the Black-tailed variety. It's the opposite. The winter plumage of the black-tailed godwit is darker (dull, even coloured grey-brown) than that of the bar-tailed godwit which feathers on the back have white edges, making it brighter. Definitely a black-tailed godwit because of the white supercilium (stripe which runs from the base of the bird's beak above its eye) which ends at the eye. While that of the bar-tailed godwit is most prominent behind the eye. Yep, sometimes it are those tiny, little details that makes the difference Cheers, Philippe I stand corrected!
