Bryan
This service, picked up from Sonyalpha rumours, reads a raw or JPG from the camera and calculates shutter count. My NEX 6 came in at just under 29,000.
spacecadet
Handy for checking out a new body. I don't know about the NEX, but on the A55 with the pellicle because of the shut-open-shut-open cycle you get a shutter actuation count as well which is almost, but not quite, double the exposure count. Interesting.
John Mitchell
Thanks for this, Bryan. I'll give it a try. My my, you've been busy.
spacecadet
He may have been slacking- it may only be 14,500.
Bryan
Either way mainly garbage, maybe a couple of hundred worthy efforts! I tend not to trust the preliminary histogram and typically take a few shots before I get the exposure that I want. Probably more of a problem using manual focus lenses. It also includes video, no idea how that stacks up.

It also includes video, no idea how that stacks up. I tried it on an image from my NEX-6 and got just shy of 10K. However, I've been using this camera for only about 20 months, and I tend not to take a lot of duplicate or similar images (and no video to speak of), mainly because I hate having to weed through them all later on. At heart, I guess I'm still a film photographer. Haven't tried this program yet on my NEX-3, which I've had for over three years and still use quite often. spacecadet
Well do you get two results, one for exposure count and one for shutter actuations? I'm curious.
Inchiquin
Well do you get two results, one for exposure count and one for shutter actuations? I'm curious. This is what you get: Detected Model: NEX-6 Shutter actuations made up to file _DSC1244.ARW: 1272 | | | | Sony_Tag9050_0x0032 = 248 | | | | Sony_Tag9050_0x0033 = 4 | | | | Sony_Tag9050_0x0034 = 0 (65536 * 0) + (256 * 4) + 248 = 1272 Allowing for a few test firings before the camera went on sale, 1272 exposures after 1244 shots looks about right to me. spacecadet
I get Detected Model: SLT-A55VExposures made up to file DSC00297.ARW: 20814| | | | | Sony_MoreInfo0201_0x011b = 78| | | | | Sony_MoreInfo0201_0x011c = 81| | | | | Sony_MoreInfo0201_0x011d = 0(65536 * 0) + (256 * 81) + 78 = 20814Total shutter actuations up to file DSC00297.ARW: 35944| | | | | Sony_MoreInfo0201_0x0125 = 104| | | | | Sony_MoreInfo0201_0x0126 = 140| | | | | Sony_MoreInfo0201_0x0127 = 0(65536 * 0) + (256 * 140) + 104 = 35944 Presumably the NEX has the same close-expose-open cycle as the A55 but only has the one parameter and counts it as 1 operation not 2 and. John Mitchell
Well do you get two results, one for exposure count and one for shutter actuations? I'm curious. Don't think so. What's the difference between exposure counts and shutter actuations (awful word)? I'm dumb.
spacecadet
The A55 shutter is usually open, to allow permanent live view. So when you press the release it has to close, open and close for the exposure, then open again. The A55 records that as one exposure but two (well, actually slightly less that two, on average) actuations. I think my question is answered as I now read that the NEX has an electronic front curtain shutter. So this is presumably why it doesn't have to do that.
