Not a Harrier. Similar undercarriage config. Interesting. Not a p1127th or SC1

It's on a crane, is it a prop for an ATV program?

Here you are it's a fictitious plane from the ATV program the Plane Makers.

The aircraft looks like an early prototype of the Hawker P1127, which was developed into the Hawker Kestrel and then the Harrier.
Your pic appears to show tethered testing of an airframe with a single engine producing vertical thrust – which would put the date quite early on in the development – maybe mid to late 1950s ?

Although already answered, the main give-away that it wasn't one of the Harrier lineage are the air intakes. The Harrier's are more rounded. Apart from the undercarriage my initial thought was an early test design for the Dassault Mirage IIIV vertical take off aircraft which more closely matched the overall shape.

Thanks. Well-spotted. There are a couple of others on G but none that I could find on Alamy.

I totally love all this!

From checking if there are any slides on sale on Ebay or in this case at my local auction. A Friday evening routine to check what is coming up locally, then visiting the auction room on Saturday morning and wondering if anybody else is interested. Bidding and buying, tracing the family, gaining permissions, working on these old slides, sharing with the forum, learning by doing research.

In this case I've been able to share on a Facebook reunion ATV forum who helped me find the photographer - one of them used to be in his team in 1961!

Thanks for all the help.

😀

........gaining permissions......

Does that include these Plane Makers images Ian? I'm sure that they'd be of interest for publication.

I have written permission from the family of the photographer.

Work out the deals, write the copy and Thunderbirds are go....

Don't have the foggiest idea. I'm getting lots of Acorn Antiques and Crossroads vibes but no...

Telstar was the first satellite that allowed Trans-Atlantic transmissions of TV - something on those lines.

The pics I have show fellas with binoculars looking out for something, a sign I suppose - presumably so the ATV crew could inform the nation of whatever it was that had potentially happened or not as the case may have been or not been depending on what they saw or didn't. Seems like some hanging about was involved.

ATV Telstar crew on Westminster bridge

Just to check that you've pinpointed the exact location, being that it isn't on Westminster Bridge as such. The arch doorway is still there on the embankment, near where the Covid memorial now begins.
