Portfolio Critique

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am new here and search didn't give me the wanted result for "portfolio" or "critique"!

Would be nice for beginners here, if some of you more experienced contributors could give some hints on newbies portfolios and which images of the specific portfolios might do best here!

Here's a link to my portfolio:

http://www.alamy.com/stock-photography/A17FF311-4C93-4D2A-BF0B-DDDBBF9EC52B/1/Ren%C3%A9%20Pirker.html

Would be great, if some of you could click through my actually 33 images and tell me what you think about and maybe chose your personal favourite out of it?! And maybe one which you absolutely don't like too?! :)

Thanks a lot, really appreciate your support,

René

Ok, I will start, but I am by no means an expert! You need to include latin names for insects and plants. Also are you really sure that the bee is on a thistle? I don't think so. Try to research what other names are used, such as your 'ladybug', its commonly called a ladybird in UK and I personally would include the number of spots, i.e. 7 spotted etc (double what you can see if only one side on photo). You do have some nice images though. Your pic of houses in the circle, says its a bridge?? Hope this helps :)

I have the sudden craving for a donut.

I always go to Yahoo Daily Stories and look at the top ten searches for yesterday. It is emailed to everyone with a Yahoo email address. Like this morning it said top searches are Hells Angels, Cadillac Names, Fall Cruises, Kid's Halloween Costumes. This gives me ideas on what I should try to take photos of. Things that are trending.

Your best image is the donuts from above with place setting. Communicates so well my mouth waters. I must have one.

Your eagle would be much better in more natural surroundings.

You are in a competition against a lot of New York images that have been done much better than yours. These are the weakest.

Your captions should answer the WHAT, WHERE, WHY, WHEN, and sometimes HOW aspects of the photograph. Use every caption space available to you.

It takes courage to ask for a critique, but keep and never loose that attitude. Your images are you, and as a creative person you have to be willing to put yourself out there every day.

Echinops - Globe thistle, so yes it's a thistle. To be honest it's more likely that there's a search for a honey bee!

I like your pictures - best = ewe and lamb and eagle washing (good concept) I'm frequently surprised by what takes a buyers fancy - edit ruthlessly and keep adding :)

I'm not an Alamy expert, but work with other agencies that are very successful in what they do, and have had some very good advice about what to avoid, if I am concerned about my wallet.  Food, flowers, animals, nature are top of the list.  Ok if you want to set up camp in the Arctic and shoot polar bears, or create a fully equipped studio kitchen, or hunt rare flowers in remote places.  Otherwise you are just adding to the Alamy fodder (get 10k of them and it is possible - just possible - to delude yourself that doing that sort of thing makes some kind of business sense).

Your star trails shows imagination and persistence, the composition is perfect for a cover (magazine, textbook or novel).  You obviously enjoyed doing it.  Go with your imagination - and avoid half-baked theories about what sells.

Many thanks to everyone of you here, giving me quite some detailed feedback, really means a lot to me as a newbie, much appreciated!

Actually I don't have that much time, as I'm also quite busy with my master studies in Information Technology and my part-time job in semiconductor business.

Have just started uploading to a few other stock agencies 1,2 years ago and at least am now also accepted here on Alamy! Quite some success for me personally :)

At least now have the possibility to maybe give some of my photos a little bit of more value and maybe one day when i have finished my studies and have a bit more time I am able to concentrate better on this business and of course I know there are lots of highly experienced pro's out there which make competition even harder year by year.

OK, so as many of you like my donut shots, I'll try to show you some more local traditional delicousness in the future.

My mum is a retired confectionist and  also her cooking skills are the best far and wide :)

Many thanks for evreything and all the best from Austria,

rené
