Canon 5D3 - AI Servo Continuous burst slow

Recommended Posts

I Can't seem to find anything about this on the internet and it's not been a priority for me to work it out until recently as I rarely use AI Servo mode.

However, I want to do a little motorsport shooting so now this is an issue.

Whats happening is that when my camera is set to 'one shot' focus - high speed burst mode works as it should - around 6 or 7fps.

The second I set the camera to AI Servo so I can focus track - she drops to less than 3fps!

Surely this can't be right?

Any help from other 5D3 users would great - have I missed a setting or something or is this just the way it is?

Posts in this link suggest speed slows when battery is less than %50

I'm utterly staggered.

I use a canon battery grip but rather than using the normal canon battery packs,  I use Eneloop Pro AA's because they last longer and they're easier to charge in an 8 cell charger - no waiting for one to charge and inserting the next - i'm lazy :) . So I use the canon battery cartridge as a backup.

I've never tested the fps on AI Servo with the canon battery cartridge inserted, so I thanks to your post, I swapped the batteries to the canon packs and and guess what - she works perfectly! lol

The Eneloops are reasonably new (2 months old) and have a good reputation - so I'm not really sure why the performance drop??  I'm currently running them through a battery condition cycle - maybe that will bring them back to life?

Thank you Ed - To be honest I had read about the battery issue before, but given i was using fully charged cells I didn't take any notice of it.

Looks like I'll be buying more canon battery packs and and additional charger so I can charge concurrently.

I'm surprised no one's picked this up before, I'm surely not the only one who uses the AA cell cartridge in the BG-E11 grip?

Well let this be a lesson to us all:

If all else fails - read the instructions!

After a lot of digging i found the user manual for the BG-E11 battery grip and guess what? It says right there in black and white that if you use the AA cell cartridge, continuous shooting in AI Servo mode is slow.. it should only be used in an emergency as a back up...

When I used EOS-3s with the Powerbooster battery grip I had the option of using the Canon (NiCad?) specialist battery or the Canon holder with AAs. That had a stated lower fps on AAs. I don't think AAs deliver the current needed to support the highest frame rates. You beat me to it!

It certainly appears that way - I didn't realise there'd be a difference.
