I am investigating selling my equipment on commission thorugh someone like Ffordes (long established) here in the UK. The commission is 20% but it includes all the taxes etc, they advertise in the main magazines and as they offer the buyer a warranty the price should be higher than a personal or eBay sale. Will be doing a bit more research over next week or two.

Anyone used them or a similar seller?

I've used Ffordes for many many years, long before they moved up narwth... the boss figured so much was going on line that having an expensive shop down south didn't make sense and he preferred the view up in Scotland.

Anyhow, excellent service and stack up very well commission wise. Never had any problems and sold thousands of pounds worth of gear through them. if anyone is after a used 'frotto 116 video head.... they have a cheap but nice one in stock :) I always use the commission route and just wait for a sale. Very honest assessment of condition and value.

That's good to hear and the gap between their commission and using eBay seems small (if any) as they should get a better price because of warranty etc. I was sure they were down south so was surprised to find that they were near Inverness, now I know why!

Generally they are priced higher (Ebayers often quote the Ffordes price as comparison) - only downside is that you have to wait longer to get paid after the sale is made - it's about three weeks as distance selling regs play a part (with commission sales).

put it on www.gumtree.com which is FREE and get the item collected cash.

I have thought about it but a lot of the items are high-end or specialised and I suspect not what the average gumtree user would be looking for. Personally. I would be VERY wary about buying high-end photo equipment that way, there is no way of checking the provenance. I suspect through Ffordes I will get very close to the same price after commission as selling direct, and with no hassle.

I will probably sell a couple of hi-fi separates systems through Gumtree though and some other bits and pieces. A couple of years ago I did sell a VW campervan through Gumtree though.

I buy occasionally off Gumtree but as a seller tool it's really a local, large item site (works well for furniture). Be very careful if you use it. There's been a host of scams especially with deposits on cars and some doorstep robberies - mainly involving mobile phones. Gumtree is only one step up from an ad in the local window - there are no checks on accounts/people and no real safe way to deal with money transactions. It would be nice for it to evolve and challenge Ebay.........or Etsy become better known on this side of the pond.

Yes it surprised me too to see SS1 turn into IV4.

But then he has a picture of the view from his office window on the website and it beats the pants off Southend pier.

We were fortunate enough to see Beauly Loch the other summer. It looks like this.
