Creative images - are they?

Every so often I look at creative images using a search.  Some images are excellent, but there are times when I cannot see how the image was deemed to be creative.

 

As an example I searched on 'woman looking at photograph'.   Many of the creative images do not have a photograph in the picture. In one a woman appears to be looking in a fridge!  Perhaps that is the creativity - the photo is in the fridge.  Cool.

 

Am I missing something? Does a person or a computer decide on what is creative?

As I understand it some of the "creative images" are hand picked and some "creative images" are simply pictures that have previously sold as a result of a similar search.

Not really creative, as in a commercial collection, just more like a best of.

'Creative' as used by the big American stock houses indicates that an image is appropriate for commercial use and will have releases, where releases are obviously needed.

 

In the UK, and perhaps Europe, 'creative' is sometimes used to denote that an image has been worked over to have a particular 'look', without any concern about usage.  In the US they just call this 'art photography'.

Here 'creative' sometimes means one, sometimes the other, and sometimes it just means that a bored designer in an obscure design agency has been clicking on images for a laugh during morning tea break.

They seem to be a random selection. No different from 'ordinary stock' images. Of course the term is totally subjective anyway to the point of being almost meaningless.
