Tim Ayers
I am trying to keep track of just over 3,000 images and there location and sales. At the moment I’m using a very basic and simple excel spreadsheet, however it’s getting a bit unwieldy so what method of image record keeping do you recommend
Duncan_Andison
Excel is a superb programme and is more than sufficient to track sales etc. That said, it is made a lot easier if you are used to using it. Separate files for each company pulling together all the stats in one summary file. Most companies provide .csv files of data regarding sales, views & $'s. These form the basis of your analysis. From there you could use simple vLookups or, SumProduct Array formulas that add and subtract data subject to conditions set out in the formula. As I say, it helps massively if you are used to using it and is not easy to explain on a forum.... sorry. But, if you want to learn.... advanced Excel & VBA book will get you on the way!! CandyAppleRed Images
I use an Access database, but before that it was a spreadsheet, and I imported the data into Access tables. It works for me, but I do have a fair bit of VBA knowledge so there's lots of nice fun buttons to press and lists to view!

Yeah, whether you use Access or Excel, good knowledge of Formula building and VBA is required. I learned out of necessity when the company I worked for didn't want to pay the licence fee for Access for some 3000 staff and only had Excel 97 :-) I had to build an loan application decisioning system with god knows how many rules in it...... and of course store details of its 1/2 million accounts. Learning a bit of VBA is key really, if you do, you can make it do anything you want!
dov makabaw
I use LR together with a folder structure and coded image refs. Have over 10k images and it works for me. dov
Tim Ayers
Thanks all Filenames are structured, the main shortcoming in my use of excel is that I have no preview, however I am considering making more use of Bridge, I'm a Nikon user who is still very happy with Capture NX2 however now Nikon have stopped development, it I may be time to move to Lightroom and as a side benefit make use of it's organising capabilities. Pearl
I use LR to a limited extent but mainly rely on a programme called Agave SPS which I bought back in the days of having to keep track of slides. You get image previews and can produce submission reports and invoices which store the data for each image. The drawback for me is that it only works on Windows and I have a Mac so have to have a virtual Windows machine inside it. You don't need any specialist knowledge to use Agave.
