geogphotos
Many thanks 😁 The Cioch, The Cuillins, Isle of Skye ID: QZP40_CARD_5488DESCRIPTION: In the early days of climbing on Skye, this amazing rock feature fixed to the imposing cliff face of Sron na Ciche was only surmised to exist. In 1899, the great mountaineer Professor Norman Collie (1859 - 1942) had noticed a shadow across a great slab while climbing in the Cuillin, but with the deception of the light and the direction of the sun, it was very difficult to pick it out from the surrounding rock. Collie only managed to get time five years later to confirm his suspicions, and in 1906 climbed the Cioch with his partner, John Mackenzie. It takes skill to find the route, with enormous boulders to be negotiated before one sees the Cioch. The view on a clear day from this vantage point is quite spectacular, high above Coire Lagan, with Loch an Fhir-bhalaich and Glen Brittle behind. The Cioch has since become a mecca for rock-climbers and in 1986 it featured as the setting for a sword-fight in the movie "Highlander".
