Licence duration

RichardP

Question

I noticed in my sales listing that sometimes the duration of a licence sale is listed (eg one year, 5 years, perpetuity) and sometimes it isn't. It's the same with both RF and RM sales. Anyone know why this is?

The terms of the licence vary according to the requirements of the client. As should the fee.

That is for RM.

Well yes, the client can specify the duration, but why is it listed sometimes and not others?

Country: Worldwide
Usage: Single company - multiple use editorial only
Industry sector: Media, design & publishing
Start: 08 January 2024

I assume that there is no end date ie) in perpetuity

Different clients have licences written the way that they want them.

Yes, I have some like that, and I have some that say perpetuity, and some that say nothing at all about the duration. It's the last category I'm asking about. Don't you have any like that?

We all have lots of in perpetuity licenses. It's likely driven by microstock companies that offer unlimited durations. Clients come to Alamy expecting the same.

I quoted that one because it has no end date. So not sure what you mean.

Are you talking about RM images because you did mention RF in your OP

I think "In perpetuity" was added because the image are for use on the web and as such they can be seen "in perpetuity"

It seems I'm not explaining myself very well. Here's an example, no mention of duration:

  5 MB
1512 x 1134 pixels
71KB compressed
Any placement: Inside or cover.

This was an RF sale but I had similar for RM sales too. I emailed Alamy about this earlier this week but then I thought it would be quicker to ask the question here.

However when I checked my sales listing for an example just now I found someone had "tidied it up" and added durations to all the RM sales and some of the RF ones. Presumably the others are perpetual.

So I guess that answers my question.

Thanks for all the responses.

RF sales are going to lack rights details. Unfortunately, RM rights have become much more general and open but as you say one would always expect more details than for RF.

I suppose buyers tell Alamy what license they want and Alamy is happy to try and provide what the customer wants.
