What's one of these called?

It's a little structure on the walls of the castle at Rethymno in Crete. It provides some protection for the person manning the arrow slit, but how would you describe it?

I've thought of turret and cupola, but I'm not convinced by either of those!

You could add "niche" to the keywording too.
