Rico
Interesting backstory on that famous photo. Story of the VJ Day Strangers | Episode 18: VJ Day In Times Square, Alfred Eisenstaedt (youtube.com)
wiskerke
Always good to see that image and that story again. Especially those days. We just had our V Day today. Eisenstaedt's image was on August 15 on the victory over Japan day, V-J Day. There was a second photographer taking a photo at the exact same time: Victor Jorgensen. His title: Kissing the war goodbye. Because Jorgensen was a Navy Lieutenant his image is free of copyright and in the LOC. It's easy to see why Eisenstadt's image works better, even when the top is cropped off. Here's the story about that image from Life with some more fine images. And here from the Naval Institute. And here from Wikipedia. wim
Rico
Thanks wim for those other links. I had no idea that there was a second photographer at that scene. You're right about Eisenstadt's photo being the better of the two images. Funny that a couple of meters can make such a difference.
