M.Chapman
Anyone know what these might be? They were growing on the trunk of what I think was a conifer tree (I must check next time I'm in the area). MDM
I am not certain but It looks like beech bark to me. I did a google search for nodules on beech bark and came up with Sphaeroblast - there is a short Wikipedia article on them.

I'm pretty sure it's not a beech tree (it's not deciduous), but it could well be a holly (also mentioned in the Wikipedia article) I'll go back and take a closer look before keywording as it's only a few miles away. MDM
Yes probably holly then. It was the smooth bark that made me think of beech but holly is similar. Not an expert but I think conifers tend to have textured bark.
