chris24
This business card sized leather pouch has the embossed impression of a Portugese stamp of the period together with an embossed Lisbon postmark dated Feb 1884. The reverse has another embossed postmark "Wien-stadt post" dated 25 Feb 1884. There is no evidence of any sealing of this 'envelope' and the inner pocket is open ended. The faded address of the prince is Minoriteplatz. Would it have actuallyhttp://c8.alamy.com/comp/E8PDH0/Vintage_leather_card_holder-E8PDH0.jpg been sent as a one time postal item? Robert M Estall
There's a whole world out there called "Post Art" There are stranger things done in the name of art. A friend of ours encourages fellow artists to correspond with her sending examples which arrive in all shapes and sizes. She has put on several exhibitions of her collection. This would not look out of place in such a collection. But it could also be something else I guess

Robert M Estall
on second thought, this mail art concept is a pretty recent thing I think. Or you have a really early trendsetter example. I'll ask someone who knows better about these things
Bhandol
The chaps (The British Postal Museum) may be able to help or know someone that can http://www.postalheritage.org.uk/page/collections, I think it may be European version of Pony Express between Royals.
