Being a bit of a "newbie" I paid for my first sensor clean with Nikon. However the dust kept on coming back, so I bit the bullet and got some swabs and fluid - worked a treat, even on my D7100 that I don't believe had an anti alias filter.   I end up doing it around once a month, and I couldn't justify paying to send it away every month.  However I think this is aggravated by several things.  1)I do change lenses quite a lot in the field. 2)My lenses aren't weather sealed ( Sigma) so I guess this isn't helping, and lastly  do a lot of photography on windy beaches and coasts.    The built in sensor cleaning menu option wasn't doing anything useful.

Also, you do notice them a lot more if you shoot apertures > F8, certainly with the high numbers. Also if you use the dehaze filter in Lightroom, that brings the dust spots out as well :-(
