Bit strong, eh? Still, always surprising what can sell. I must confess that I was surprised at your BW sale of the Bullring recently. Don't get me wrong - great image, but the style and the monochrome take was not something I would have thought of as an obvious seller here : far from it. Still, well done  - to both you and Kirk Fisher!

I agree. The light was way off and weird composition but seems to have checked all the boxes for the client (a brochure for a property development conference in Birmingham).

Whereas my other traditional stock image of the bullring (below) hasn't been sold once. I give up trying to figure out what buyers want - best to offer different styles of similar places, I suppose.

Lots of similar images to the above, I guess. I recently took some very similar, but haven't as yet uploaded them for that very reason - no rush, if I haven't got anything new to offer. Whereas your sale offered a different take at the right time.

Mine too. But I guess a lot of travel pic buyers are going for images that have the instagram OTT look (not just with HDR, but sun rays, bleached look, fake backlit shots etc). I have experimented (and uploaded, since Alamy have put out several tweets that they want the instagram look) but really don't like the images. But, if it's what buyers want, then that is fair enough, totally understand that they want pics that are in demand from buyers.

My pet hate though is togs who are too lazy to brighten up selectively and just brighten up with a large brush around faces/people/elements, ending up with a huge halo around the figure. It's clearly being accepted by QC so must be ok technically, but I cannot bare looking at the images. Makes me wonder why I bother trying to be so careful and spend lots of time doing it more selectively, when a hasty job on it does get the thumbs up all the time. And the problem is that buyers then think it's a visual trend, instagram will be full of it, and hey presto, nobody bothers any more. self fulfilling prophecy. (I am turning into a grumpy old woman before I'm old. Help!!!)

I agree with your above list.

Mine is using VSCO filters for stock photos. 9.5/10 times it's going to put off buyers. I got a harsh criticism once from a photo editor when making a sample submission to join his agency and I included many images with retro looks. I now try to keep these to a minimum. Once in a while I'll go crazy just fine art style just for fun - maybe there's a buyer out there as crazy as I am.
