Dear All.

Please can anyone tell me what Novel use means ?

Many thanks

I think it covers uses like a student or teacher needing an image for a class project. Things like that. Sells for pennies or a dollar or two. A sale won't pay for a Starbuck's coffee.

Here it is at the bottom, which is where the prices are.

It's responsible for my biggest highest/lowest price ratio for the same image (75:1). One 5 years ago, nothing since, though  some prices have approached it.

I believe that, in theory, Novel Use covers uses that fall outside Alamy's other licensing models.

Didn't work for me. I opted out a long time ago. Rumour is that NU may not exist any longer (?).

NU still exists; I got a novel use sale today.

From older forum posts I knew that I would not earn any real money from NU sales, but I hoped that more sales would increase my rank. Now I got my first NU sale and I'm upset.

License details:

Country: Worldwide

Usage: Editorial

Media: Editorial website

Industry sector: Media, design & publishing

Image Size: Any size

Start: 02 November 2016

End: 02 November 2021

Novel use, India rights

Price: USD 1.41

To me, the license details don't look like a real novel use, rather like a classical editorial online use discounted to microstock prices. For sure nothing related to "new and exciting markets" (quote from Alamy website)I'm considering to ask MS/CR about more details about the license, but probably it's just a waste of time.

Looking forward to opt out of NU next April. The vast majority of my sales are regular sales anyways, so the presumed ranking benefit of NU sales is low.

Edit: the image has been zoomed a few days ago.

Hi Christoph.

Same deal that I had today. India same price etc.

Wasn't sure quite what the usage was.

Thanks for all the replies.

It's difficult to think of a usage that wouldn't be already covered by Alamy's flexible licensing models.

Also, It remains a mystery why use on an editorial website would be "novel."

Hi Chrumu,

I do not believe that NU is included in ranking.

Here's a previous thread.

http://discussion.alamy.com/index.php?/topic/5928-sale-price-question/page-1#entry99113

As Pearl was saying in that thread: "Too many low priced sales could actually damage your Alamy Rank as one of the factors taken into account is average sale price. Which may be why Alamy said NU sales wouldn't count towards ranking"

Hope this helps.

Most of mine were for pennies but I got one novel use sale a few years back for $50 which was novel indeed!

I also shot a set of concept images where one sold for $250 and another as NU for pennies a month or so later. I haven't seen one in a couple of years.

Once I was something like 35 cents short of a payout and an NU sale nailed it for me. Glad it doesn't affect your rank.

I think this 'Novel Use' sale today (30 Jan 2019) speaks for itself. I'm opting out in April so that if someone likes an image of mine they have to at least pay the regular editorial price.

Industry sector: Government (local, regional, national)
Print run: up to 250,000
Image Size: Any size
Start: 28 January 2019
End: 28 January 2024
$ 4.90
