Based on what? : )

The article talks about Meadow Browns, but that picture is a Gatekeeper!

Yours pedantically, John.

I think it's a gatekeeper based on the fact that a gatekeeper has 2 'pupils' in the eye spot as opposed to a Meadow Brown that has only one.

Call for a Lepidopterist!! In my humble opinion it is a female Meadow Brown. Both sexes of the Gatekeeper have three or four white spots on the underside of the hind wing and I can't see any on this image.

Humbly, Jim.

True about the spots on the Gatekeeper.

It looks like a Gatekeeper's forewings and a female Meadow Brown's hind wings!

I could be wrong though!

John.

Edit: I have just seen a picture in Jeremy Thomas and Richard Lewington's book 'The Butterflies of Britain and Ireland'  that has got one illustration of a female Meadow Brown with two pupils in the eye spot, all the others have just one spot; so they sometimes, but not usually, can have 2 pupils.

It is correctly captioned after all. My apologies!

John, with a red face.

Meadow Browns are not often, but can be bipupilled. : )

Yes, I didn't know that and have just embarrassingly found out myself, see my post above!

That might make my butterfly count more difficult when I walk my transect as I have always used the 2 pupils (as well as the size) as a sure indication that its a Gatekeeper and not a Meadow Brown!

John.
