Have you found any Alamy images April 2016

Recommended Posts

OK, that makes more sense.  So how does one find oodles of images like Brian above?

You pick a publication that is a member of the Newspaper scheme ( where they have a deal with Alamy) and look through the articles in search of Alamy credited photos. Tineye will find most of them, but Google reverse image search is sometimes helpful, if only to find keywords to be used in a standard Alamy search.

I find that the DM tends to illustrate its articles with either Alamy or Corbis sourced photos, so if you come across a Corbis shot, the chances are that the remainder of the piece is also using Corbis.

BIg G etc also get a look in, but only a minority of the shots are sourced there.

With practice you can find images in no time at all.

This is not entirely altruistic, searching for images in this way you develop a feel for what will and will not sell. (Yes virtually anything sells, but some things rather more than others!) It's an excellent exercise for newbies to stock, highly recommended!

I also feel that it is useful to let the papers know that there is some check on what they are using, as, on occasion, sales slip through the net.  I guess that this was my original motivation for getting involved.

All what Bryan said!

Plus you will learn a lot about what sort of keywords are being used.

Usually your aim will be to use keywords that bring up the image on the first page. Preferably on the visible top half of the page in the case of a newspaper. Books and covers may require deeper drilling, but newspaper images are too cheap for that. The editor may use a button or a tab, like one used to kick the TV set in case of interference.

So do try the New or even the Creative tab: new searches will often default to the Creative tab for some reason.

Tony Tallec's photograph appeared in the Telegraph 14-4-16 in an article by Emily Leary. Tony's photo of a boy playing in a swimming pool was used to illustrate Emily's comparison of the pros and cons of all inclusive versus self catering holidays.
