I have been meaning to ask this for ages.

According to Alamy's website,

Essential Keywords: The most important words and phrases for the image. Although you have 50 characters, try to limit yourself to just 35 - about 6 to 8 words only.

Can someone please tell me why?

Hi SFL

I dont really know why they would say limit the essential keywords to 35 characters. Doesnt seem to make a lot of sense to me.

Perhaps something to do with weighting of the individual keywords?

You lost me there, I'm afraid.

Was just a guess, as I have exactly zero knowledge of how Alamy does it:

But if there are say

3 Essential keywords, each would have a weight of .33

4 Essential Keywords, each would have a weight of .25

5 Essential Keywords, each would have a weight of only .20

and so on...

Which would mean that an image with fewer essential keywords, those individual keywords would rank higher???

Pure conjecture, please disregard.  :)

Sounds like a decent theory to me. Perhaps Alamy can explain.

I feel really pleased if I manage to use exactly 50 characters in the essential keyword box!

As Reciprocity says, its perhaps to do with weighting?

They would have to be very short words.  Eight words in 35 letters (plus spaces) works out at less than four letters per word.  Even six words would be five-letter words.

Doesn't seem to have been thought through.
