Copy Stand alternative on KickStarter

Recommended Posts

It's pretty difficult to recommend affordable copy stands to buy new, and really a good copy stand is good to have when you are copying film. So-called 'basic' copy stands from major suppliers in the film copying business don't inspire much confidence, mostly flimsy affairs and not cheap. Yes, converted enlargers can be brilliant, especially if they were sold with the relevant hardware as an accessory but enlargers are still pricy.

Still, I wasn't too impressed with this one, seems to shake a bit in the video and there's no obvious way to align the camera with any precision, and precision is required. The film rolls in the leg looks like a rather desperate marketing gimmick, seems like it might meet its threshold though. It's a good price, could work with cameras at the smaller, lighter end of the spectrum.

A huge range of possible options in this thread:

I quite like the idea of it, but in my case (no remote release) the vibration issue would be problematic. That design in plastic is just not rigid enough for me. However, with tethered shooting with a mirrorless camera using an E-Shutter it could be OK. The lack of adjustment is no big deal IMO. Using a target mirror for alignment the camera can be yawed around the tripod mounting thread and pitched by shimming under the tripod back leg. The other problem with this design (for me) is that my light-box (contains an iPad) won't fit between the 3 legs. So I gave it a miss.

Great thread! Some of those designs based on two "hinged" sheets of wood with a slider rail look very interesting. But is it worth the time to make something when my inverted Manfrotto does what I need, even though it's a bit fiddly to set up.

OTOH, it makes me want a 3D printer. Thereare all sorts of bit and pieces I could make!

Just managed to scrape over the line, "CHF 6,353 pledged of CHF 6,250 goal". Plenty of people doing 3D printed film holders on Etsy, I thought the Lobster looked quite well thought out.

Neat. I like the support grid. I hadn't thought of browsing Etsy for 3D printed film scanning accessories. There's plenty of choice!
